Serenade
John Lardieri Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sitting up under the lights
You take away and I
I was only one more day gone
She was only what I hide behind
Tell me where do we go here but down...

'Cause this ain't no apology
Got nothing to be sorry for.
'Cept the endless hours wasted
Sitting out your door.
From underneath your window,
I'll sing you to sleep,
I'll sing you one more song of love.

This ain't no fucking love song.

Once I'm out from under your skin
I can finally begin
To see you put you underneath
That big white light again.
Tell me where do I go here but down...

'Cause this ain't no apology
Got nothing to be sorry for.
'Cept the endless hours wasted
Sitting out your door.
From underneath your window,
I'll sing you to sleep,
I'll sing you one more song of love.

This ain't no fucking love song.

And it occurs to me
Oh how do I love thee?
Let me count the
One the way
You left me down and
2am before I found
3 words that I can say
4 letters from tonight.

Sitting all alone
And breaking on down
Till I finally realize
I've been taken for granted
I
Am just a bit
Disenchanted
And all of the ways that you've fallen behind
I was the one you want
Where do I go here but down?

And how we've wasted
Time and time again.
She waits to find me down on the floor
Why do we waste our time?

It occurs to me

How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.

Overall Meaning

John Lardieri’s song Serenade tells the story of a tumultuous relationship that is on the brink of collapse. The singer of the song is sitting under the lights, pondering his situation. He realizes that the more time he spends with his lover, the more he feels like he is going down a dark path. He is not apologetic about any of his actions and has nothing to be sorry for, except for the endless hours he wasted waiting for his lover to come back to him. He sings about being under his lover's window, singing her to sleep, but not with a love song as he is not feeling the love anymore.

In the second verse, the singer has finally been able to remove himself from his lover's clutches and can start to see her in a new light. He realizes that his former lover is still underneath the big white light again. He is still not apologetic about his actions as he knows he is better off without her. He is singing a song of love, but it's not a love song; he sings it to put his former lover to sleep for the last time.

The third and final verse brings closure to the song. The singer is sitting alone, reflecting on his time spent with his lover, realizing that he was taken for granted. He understands that he has fallen out of love with her; however, he can't help but count the ways he loved her even though it didn't work out in the end.

Overall the song is about the process of falling out of love with someone and the realization that sometimes you have to let go even when it's hard.
