One of the greatest songs ever recorded. Very difficult to do it justice live, especially with the technology available to them at the time. McCartney found some nice piano chords that worked here. They were just a great team, and George Martin was so good at helping them realise their ideas.

ps there is some misunderstanding (no pun intended) in the comment section. This wasn't a recording session for the song. They were just jamming it. Strawberry Fields Forever had been released a year earlier in 67. The song was so heavily produced and reliant on unique recording processes, such as backward loops and slowed down tape it was almost impossible to recreate live, which is why it sounds like they are in the writing stage here.

In reality they had outgrown being Beatles and now was the time to follow seperate paths. The retraints that being Beatles put on both their shoulders had become too restricting for both of them. John knew it and Paul didn't. Walking away was always going to be hard, but it had to happen sooner or later.
If a friend and colleague leaves your place of work, do you disgregard him/her and every memory you ever shared together, or do you wish them every happiness and really mean it?

John was never happy about the way Strawberry Fields was arranged, and he's on record saying that Paul took an experimental approach to the song which John wouldn't have done and in hindsight didn't like.

To me, this clip is Paul giving John a glimpse of what the song could/should have been, sensitively done, full of emotion and longing.

Look, it's all true, and he also complained about this with respect to across the universe, he complained a couple of different times about how Paul sabotaged his songs, I think my whole thing with this is that John just didn't have enough energy in these sessions to see his songs all the way through, whereas McCartney as his wife pointed out was a perfectionist and saw his songs all the way through, that's the difference here, and you can't really blame McCartney for any of it at all....

They always used the excuse that they couldn't recreate live what they were doing in the studio but that was a copout. There are ways around it.. for elaborate songs like Strawberry Fields a kind of stripped down version like this would have been a great addition to a concert.

The fact that Paul acknowledged that John wrote this masterpiece himself, puts him right in it. In his book many years from now. He basically gives John full writing credit for only a handful of Lennon McCartney songs. Nowhere Man, and You've got to hide your love away being amongst the other pieces. @GravityBoy72 I don’t think Hey Jude is on that level (epic ending but it takes forever to get there)… B Side of Abbey Road is epic; not a song as much as a collection of unfinished songs arranged and produced magically by George Martin; I would say “Here Comes the Sun” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” were perhaps the best songs they produced after 67 although The White Album and Abbey Road are FULL of magic and two of their greatest albums ever. definitely a ton of great music after 67 including Hey Jude, Abbey Road Medley, Come Together, Revolution, Something, Because, etc

I honestly think citiers should have a rock orchestra. Every city in the UK pays out millions in taxpayer money for an orchestra or ballet or opera house or all three for the elites to enjoy. Yet with musicians like John Lennon gone, we can never hear his music live played in full with an orchestra and great musicians. It is time that we had programs of music from the 60s played by great band musicians backed up by orchestras with a hired singer that can do them justice. Most of these acts that dress up as Bowie or whatever are terrible or don't have the money for decent musicians. The music should be performed as music with the same respect as the millions spent on producing classical music.

I see this as Paul saying goodbye to John honestly. This is John’s quintessential song, Beatles or otherwise, and the fact Paul is singing it on the piano just feels like a goodbye interspersed with the paper headlines. Look at John while he’s playing the guitar, it’s like he knows this is Paul sending him off and wishing him all love. This is an amazing moment here.

Don’t think they were thinking that in depth about it. Paul was messing around on the piano, and decided to start playing it. Paul has cited that song as being one of his favorite John Lennon songs, he was most likely just playing it as a little nod of appreciation to John at most.

He was the “co-writer” because of the nature of the Lennon-McCartney partnership, just as John was the “co-writer” of Yesterday. But the mellotron was an inspired piece of arrangement on Macca’s part. Don’t think anyone in their right mind would say he was a complete stranger to this song.

He wasn’t a co-writer at all. The song was brought to the studio by John completely finished, music and words. Was just a matter of arrangement and production in which the entire band/team collaborated and contributed as usual

For me it's interesting this scene, because Paul play the piano playing Strawberry Fields looking John, it's some slowly and melancholic for how the life changed for these four boys, and John are doing a little collaboration with Paul in the jam, but John don't look Paul, and, in the middle of all, Peter Jackson show all these newspapers that says "John Lennon: I'm in love with Yoko", it does this more sad, for me these escene it's some tricky in reference to Mc-Lennon, call me conspiranoic if you want it, but if this a puzzle, it's all right.

John Lennon wrote Strawberry Fields, but it isn't "John's song"... all the Beatles worked tirelessly together to develop it, along with George Martin. The entire composition is John; the amazing melody, the incredibly unique harmony/chord progression (my favorite Beatles chord progression of all by far), the idea to stitch two disparate takes together… the singing, the imagery and words… it was John Lennon with a backing band just like Let it Be was Paul with a backing band (not that I would ever compare let it be to a song like Strawberry Fields but you get what I mean I think

These kind of arrangements are only found in John’s songs (also Walrus, Tomorrow Never Knows, Rain, etc)…. no coincidence

And before you say it’s just that I don’t like Paul-I also don’t like Elton’s version of LITSWD or Pinball Wizard. Sometimes certain songs just sound best with the original singer. They seem to be having a really difficult time playing this music. Some of the chords are wrong. I'm beginning to think that maybe Theodor Adorno really did write their music. And the breakup of the Beatles in 1970 corresponded with Adorno's death, but blamed unconvincingy on Yoko.

Also the idea of "Yoko being responsible for their break up" is mostly just assumptions made by fans, The Beatles themselves never blamed her. The real cause of their breakup was multifaceted, includes business and personal struggles and in fact it was John himself who instigated the break up. Lots of logical answers can be found base on their interviews yet here you are presuming with that false idea in order to support your own theory.

My reasons are logical. I a have a decent amateur education in music--enough of an education to appreciate the very high level of music theory that must have gone into writing so much of the Beatles' output. To my educated mind, the idea that this music could have been written by young guys who could barely read music is far-fetched. And Adorno's death coinciding with break-up of the Beatles (a break-up that comes with several inconclusive "logical" theories) leads me to speculate accordingly. The theory might make you uncomfortable, but the beauty of logic is that it has a way of getting to truth without getting bogged down in people's feelings. You seem to be personally offended by the Adorno hypothesis but have no real basis for rejecting it. If you can present something other than feelings, I would be more than happy to put my suspicions to rest.
