Working Class Hero
John Lennon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

As soon as you're born they make you feel small
By giving you no time instead of it all
'Til the pain is so big you feel nothing at all
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

They hurt you at home and they hit you at school
They hate you if you're clever and they despise a fool
'Til you're so fucking crazy you can't follow their rules
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

When they've tortured and scared you for twenty-odd years
Then they expect you to pick a career
When you can't really function you're so full of fear
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

Keep you doped with religion and sex and TV
And you think you're so clever and classless and free
But you're still fucking peasants as far as I can see
A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

There's room at the top they are telling you still
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill
If you want to be like the folks on the hill

A working class hero is something to be
A working class hero is something to be

If you want to be a hero well just follow me
If you want to be a hero well just follow me

Overall Meaning

John Lennon's "Working Class Hero" is a powerful song that sheds light on the trials and tribulations of the working class. The first verse describes how society and institutions make individuals feel small and insignificant from birth, by giving them no time to develop themselves. The resulting pain makes them numb, making it easier for the system to use them for their work. The chorus speaks to the heroism of the working class, who have had to endure so much difficulty and pain in their everyday lives. The second verse addresses how people are mistreated at home and school and how the intelligent are despised, leading people to go crazy and not be able to abide by the societal rules.

The third verse discusses the effects of torture and fear on a person's psyche and its ability to limit their career opportunities. The last verse talks about how society distracts the working class by keeping them brainwashed with things like religion, sex, and TV, leading to a false sense of liberty. The message is potent, speaking to a person's responsibility to take their lives into their hands, adopt a critical perspective, and reject the ways in which they're being controlled.

One of my top favorite songs of all time. John Lennon plays on your heart strings and relates to the common man who feels trapped and lied to in this dysfunctional society.
