John Mayall is often referred to as the "Father of the British blues." His well-known band is still called John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers. They started out in the late 1950s in England, using Chicago style blues as a starting basis for their sound, which has evolved from album to album. And while at one point John Mayall was playing a fairly jazzy sound, he has always come back to the blues.
One of the interesting features of the Bluesbreakers is that members have changed on a very regular basis, and many have gone on to well deserved fame and fortune with other bands and as solo acts. Past members include: Eric Clapton, and Jack Bruce, (also of Cream), Peter Green, John McVie, Mick Fleetwood, and Mick Taylor, (who went on to a five -year stint with the Stones.) The studio album recorded with Clapton, entitled John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, was recorded in 1966, and is widely considered to be one of the great classic blues albums on either side of the stormy Atlantic. Cream came round right after.
John Mayall stands out for several reasons - his standing up for the blues, while experimenting with different approaches, his ability to attract the best of musicians; and perhaps most notably his willingness to work with musicians who far outshine him in sheer ability. And he himself sounds very good!

John Mayall Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When we made each other wild
Just a silly kind of quarrel
When we made each other wild
Maybe both of us were wrong
But somebody's acting like a child
You shouldn't have been so selfish
You shouldn't have been so selfish
I shouldn't have walked out
It makes you kind of wonder
What love is all about
Now I've gone and lost my feelings
Ever since you got me riled
Now I've gone and lost my feelings
Ever since you got me riled
Maybe we should talk it over
Somebody's acting like a child
The above lyrics by John Mayall, in his song Somebody, delve into the theme of a quarrel between two lovers. The quarrel, as described in the song, appears to be silly but has the potential to turn both of them wild. The singer reflects on the fact that both he and his lover may have been wrong, but one of them is acting like a child. The song talks about the consequences of this quarrel, which have resulted in the singer losing his feelings for his lover.
The lyrics highlight the fact that, even in a loving relationship, trivial matters and misunderstanding can lead to a fall-out. The singer blames the quarrel on the selfishness of his partner and regrets his own impulsiveness in walking out. The song concludes with the suggestion that the lovers sit down and talk things over, rather than acting on their emotions.
Overall, the song Somebody portrays the complexity of human relationships and the fragility of love, emphasizing the importance of communication and understanding in a relationship.
