@Squirrelly Temple I’m actually the wrong person to challenge. How much do you want to bet? I’d bet 100k if you’re willing…I know you won’t so I’ll send you a video anyway. Don’t assume just because someone is posting on the internet that they don’t know what they’re doing.

We clearly have a different definition of what beginner, intermediate, etc is but I’ll admit I was probably wrong and that it’s closer to advanced. Most importantly it’s a great song for an aspiring student.

I’ll still take that bet if you want.

Wth are you talking about? This is an extremely difficult song, way beyond intermediate. No beginner could even attempt something like this. The chord progression is very complicated and the rhythm is tricky. I bet you can't play it.

@Homer G There’s generally three reasons why something is tricky to play. One is the obvious it’s fast or precise…technically hard to play. This song doesn’t really fall into that category. Next is a difficult rhythm…this song definitely has a lot going rhythmically. Syncopated strumming and hits and it goes to half time at one point. What’s most difficult about the song is the form…it has a lot of chords and if you don’t understand their function they will almost seem random. You’re in E but then it goes to Emin, then to F#7, the chorus starts on Amin, and if you don’t know the role of each chord it it’s enough to make your head spin. What I mean by chord function is the number system is I major, vi min, II maj, etc. Here in Nashville we write them with regular numbers and not Roman numerals but i digress! The chorus is A min D7 Emaj or iv bVII I. For us music school geeks( and John was certainly one of them) that’s known as a back door ii V, a cadence often seen in jazz tunes. As soon as we hear the chorus we know the flavor of the cadence and the exactly what those chords are. Every part of the song has a recognizable chord progression if you you understand theoretically what’s going on. If you don’t get the theory it will require lots of memorization on top of the tricky rhythm…making it really hard to play.

I’ve been teaching over 20 years now(damn it can’t really be that long!). Let me know if you’d like to do a lesson…we could break down all the chords, analyze them etc!

I’m 23 now. When I was 4 - 8 years old my mom would drive me to my grandparents pool 4 or 5 days a week. She would play this song every time. This song came on my phone while I was sitting at work yesterday. I’m a person who always holds back his emotions. I cry maybe once every couple years. Well… yesterday sitting in work with about 100 people around me I started crying in front of my 100 coworkers. This song brought me back to the best years of my life. An innocent kid, riding in the car with my mom and sisters on the way to swim at our grandparents on a sunny summer day. My mom singing this song in the drivers seat while we all tried to sing along. I would do anything to go back and relieve those years of my life. I love you with all my heart mom. I always will, even if I don’t always show it.

Fell in love with the song ever since it first came out on the radio. When I first got my guitar, I spent a lot of nights practicing this song. And when I kind of felt down and lost during my twenties, I played this song for comfort. I always tend to play this song whenever friends invite me over to play a few songs in their gigs. I was in junior high when this song came out...I remember not being interested because my mom liked John Mayer. Then a few months ago I heard it on a playlist, and I realized I had never actually LISTENED to it. the first time I heard this song I was driving home from work on a hot California afternoon. I was stunned. The 1st time I heard this song, I loved it already coz it created some atmosphere that was sad, melancholy or something like that, and it wanted me to reflect on life. Since then, I've been loving John Mayer's music.

man, I was 11 when this song came out, it was playing on my local radio almost every day and I use to hear it before I went to school, and now I'm turning 29 and I still listen to the song casually. and to be honest, this is still a great song a song that I'll never forget. It brings back a lot of memories of when I was young.

@Omari Brown I defo sometimes wish I could just be a truck driver or an excavator operator. A degree looks fancy and gives some title, but one doesn’t need it to have a proper paying job. A vocational course would be better. I wish I had done one in carpentry

Oh college was a wasteeee. Lol I got that piece of paper for my mom to hang up on the wall, joined corporate America and haaaated every second. I graduated with a computer science degree, just to fix computer and come in to work feeling like I'd be fired every time I sneezed wrong. One day I wore chinos(jean like slacks) during the week. The rule was we could only wear jeans on Friday so my manager called me into his office to have a "correctional coaching" about my unfitting wardrobe. That was it. I quit and followed my older brothers who are truck drivers and never seen a college campus. 6 years laters, I'm well established, paid off my wasted student debt, and love my job.

I hate seeing my college peers struggle to get in their field and get paid literally half of what I make, and deal with three times the stress. The "real world" lied to us all

Not sure if you guys have ever watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, but the first opening song has a similar base chord progression to this. But while this is very chilled out and relaxed, but fun sounding, that song was more whimsical and exciting and it seemed to be based around exploring the world.

John is one of my biggest inspirations and this song is my childhood haha. He's the one who inspired me to start playing guitar and street performing in Philadelphia.
