Speak for Me
John Mayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Now the cover of a Rolling Stone
Ain't the cover of a Rolling Stone
And the music on my radio
Ain't supposed to make me feel alone

Would you liked to know
Have to learn to let it go
Show me something I can be
Play a song that I can sing
Make me feel as I am free
Someone come speak for me

Well they're celebrating broken things
I don't wanna world of broken things
You can tell that something isn't right
When all your heroes are in black and white

Would you have liked to say
At least I still have yesterday
Show me something I can be
Play a song that I can sing
Make me feel as I am free
Someone come speak for me
Someone come speak for me

La di da di da
La di da di da
La di da di da di da di da
La di da di da di da di da
Hey

I'm not mad about it
But I'm not mad about it
I'm not mad about it
But I'm not that mad about it

Just show me something I can be
Play a song that I can sing
Make me feel as I am free
Someone come speak for me
Someone come speak for me
Someone come speak for me

Now the cover of a Rolling Stone
Ain't the cover of a Rolling Stone

Overall Meaning

John Mayer’s song Speak for Me is a powerful critique of the state of music, media and society in general. The first verse conveys the idea that appearing on the cover of a magazine doesn’t necessarily make you successful or fulfilled. The second line also points out that the music on the radio is not necessarily genuine, comforting or made for the right reasons. The second verse decries the glorification of “broken things” in our world, implying that there is a romanticization of pain, struggle and failure. Mayer contrasts this with the value of “yesterday,” a symbol of tradition, wisdom and culture that should be appreciated and learned from.

The refrain is an emotional plea for someone to speak for the singer, to represent them and give them a voice. The singer is alone and lost, yearning for something that will “make me feel as I am free.” The bridge repeats this same plea with greater emphasis and intensifies musically, building up to a climax that is both desperate and hopeful. The final verse returns to the first with a slight variation, suggesting that the cover of Rolling Stone magazine is not equal to the worth or substance of real artistic achievement.

Overall, Speak for Me can be seen as a warning against shallow, consumerist and narcissistic values that pervade modern society, and a call for deeper, more meaningful and authentic communication and connection.

I just realized, his life is going to be one of the greatest stories of all time.

The amount of people - inspiration he gives to fans and fellow musicians, even the superstars and others with a legendary status. The vast difference in musical genres. The quality within every album and every live performance.

go listen to his contributions to: Frank Ocean - Eric Clapton - BB King - Barbra Streisand - Leon Russel - Ed Sheeran... the list goes on and on...

The revolutionary work he does with his trio... ( Ain't No Sunshine, California Dreamin' , After Midnight, Little Sur etc etc etc )

He truly is a "master musician" and "doesnt even know how good he really is" (words of Eric Clapton, who lived through SRV/Hendrix/Zepplin/Beatles ETC)

Every part of his life adds to music as a whole, and we get to sit back and enjoy the ride.

Hey Funky Stevie J,
I am 63, started playing at 11. I'm embarrassed to tell you how long it took me to learn "Who Says". I'm only a rhythm player but had to get those riffs throughout. And to sing on top of that, it nearly killed me. That's why I do only 4 or 5 of his songs. I agree with all sentiments praising John Mayer. It didn't take long for most people to understand the monster musician this guy is. Even musicians who said they hate him and/or he sucks, did so out of resentment of the greatness he possesses.
"HOWEVER", I do disagree with only one small, tiny, little statement you had made. I think he does know how good he is. He has to. This is a gift, yes, but it was also in large part, the result of incredibly hard work and dedication to his passion. I can't make the claim to have the knowledge of Clapton on musicianship. But I can say, almost from the start of his fame, I argued he was perhaps the best I have ever heard. He does it all, and extraordinarily well.
Have a good life and keep playing my friend.
