Try
John Mayer Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Takes four days to get to like me
But two to wanna leave
But the part that really gets me
Are all the moments in between
Now I lie to get a little
And laugh at every little thing
She's high on information
But now I'm low on self-esteem

So I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself
Although myself will wonder why
I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself this time

I'm a hundred kinds of crazy
But I only wanna find
One sweet little angel
Who's gonna let me speak my mind
All I ever do these days
Is dumb my process down
She's making her decision
But now I'm losing all my ground

So I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself
Although myself will wonder why
I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself this time

Easy does it now
Just keep your damn mouth shut
She thinks you're hot already
Don't go and press your luck
No news is good news coming
You gotta wait to find
Don't go and blow it
You do every single time

Oh I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself
Although myself will wonder why
I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself this time

you know, you know
I'm gonna try (try)
I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself
Although myself will wonder why
I'm gonna try (try)

I'm gonna try (try)
Gonna try to be myself this time

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Mayer Trio's song Try explore the idea of trying to be oneself and the difficulty that comes with it. The opening lines suggest that it takes four days for someone to start liking the singer, but only two days to want to leave. This indicates that the singer is perhaps hard to understand or connect with initially, but once someone takes the time to get to know them, they can appreciate their company. The singer then goes on to express frustration with themselves for not being able to be fully honest and authentic with their love interest. They find themselves lying to impress them and feeling inferior as a result.

The chorus declares the singer's intention to try and be themselves, even if it's difficult or uncomfortable. They acknowledge that it might not be easy, and that they might wonder why they're bothering with it, but they're going to give it a shot anyway. The bridge advises the singer to take it easy and not say too much, lest they ruin what they have with their love interest. They're encouraged to be patient and wait for things to unfold naturally.

Overall, these lyrics seem to be about the struggle to be oneself in a relationship, and the fear of rejection that can come with it. By choosing to try and be authentic regardless of the outcome, the singer is taking a brave step towards self-acceptance and honesty.

@ZEMIRA100MELODIAS

One more blues album, please! It's that so hard? We don't have enough blues music......Β

@EstrayOne

still no blues album :(

@awalbeck8211

John Mayer is best served with a side of blues. Don't know why he abandoned this project. I don't listen to any of my JM records anymore...except this one. And it's the only one I stock in my record store.

@bluesyace9564

I don't understand why people keep saying this, if you have a pure blues album, it'll get old by the third track, most of the songs in this record have similar feel, its nice to listen to them separately but listening to them all at once makes it boring because they sound somewhat similar and the solos get redundant. Brings me to my next point, the solos, you don't have much space to go around in a pure blues setting, the dynamism will be lost, what John does is perfect, he does soul and r&b mixed with blues kinda stuff and that's what keeps his solos fresh and amazing every time you listen to him, a pure blues record will dry out his solos so that is a very bad idea

@itsamberelise853

@Bluesy Ace No said that he had to make a pure blues album. We just want another blues inspired album. It is just a fact that what John does best is blues. However, because he is a pop artist, he makes his own pop music that is blues inspired. What we are saying is that he didn't need to stop with Try, Continuum, or Where the Light is. He needed to keep going on the trajectory and keep making soulful music. After all, John himself said that this is the kind of music he enjoys most. Moreover, the reason we keep coming back is because unlike the short life span of pop music, soul music never dies!

@bluesyace9564

@itsAmberElise nah if he went in the same trajectory then we wouldn't have gotten the absolute gems that are born and raised and paradise valley, his best works are in there, I suggest you go listen to "if I ever get around to living live at the letterman" and the point again is, that it would indeed get redundant if he kept on doing things similar to this, that's what makes John Mayer great, the variety, the feeling that you get that you are listening to a new artist on every new album, and no, he only makes pop singles, not pop albums, if he were to go in that trajectory he would be limiting himself, instead he chose to broaden his horizons and got to play with the dead. I wouldn't call John Mayer my favorite musician if he did the same shit 1000 times over, the reason I get bored after 5 bb king, srv, jimi hendrix song, they didn't venture anywhere

@teardropsonmyfallen

John Mayer should be in the hall of fame

@benwade7334

I agree, but I think he's not eligible until 2025.

@caroline_0

Why not?
