Authority Song
John Mellencamp Lyrics

They like to get you there and smile in your face
They think, they're so cute when they got you in that condition
Well I think it's a total disgrace, and I say
I fight authority, authority always wins
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
Well, I been doing it, since I was a young kid
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
I call up my preacher
I say, "Gimme strength for Round 5"
He said "You don't need no strength, you need to grow up, son"
I said "Growing up leads to growing old and then to dying
And dying to me don't sound like all that much fun", and so I'll say
I fight authority, authority always wins
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
Well, I been doing it, since I was a young kid
I've come out grinnin'
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
I say, oh no, no no
I say, oh no, no no
I say, oh no, no no no
I fight authority, authority always wins
I fight authority, authority always wins (kick it in)
I've been doing it since I was a young kid
And I come out grinnin'
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
Well, I fight authority, authority always wins
I've been doing it since I was a young kid
And I come out grinnin'
Well, I fight authority, Authority always wins
So I said
I fight authority, authority always wins (oh no)
Well I fight authority, authority always wins (oh no no)
Well I've doing it since I was a young kid (oh no)
The lyrics of "Authority Song" by John Mellencamp criticize the way authorities like to take advantage of people and put them in a difficult situation. These authorities, who try to control people, smile in their faces and think they are cute, but Mellencamp sees them as a disgrace. He has been fighting against such authorities since childhood, and although he always comes out with a grin, he knows that authority always wins.
In the second verse, Mellencamp calls up his preacher for strength to fight the authorities, but the preacher tells him that he does not need strength but to grow up. Mellencamp rejects the idea of growing up and getting old, as it leads to dying, which doesn't sound fun to him. So he continues to fight authority.
The song implies that people should not give in to authority but should fight against it. Mellencamp's personal experience of fighting against authority since childhood shows that it is not easy to defeat authority, but it is still worth resisting.
