Small Town
John Mellencamp Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And I live in a small town
Probably die in a small town
Oh, those small communities
All my friends are so small town
My parents live in the same small town
My job is so small town
Educated in a small town
Taught to fear of Jesus in a small town
Used to daydream in that small town
Another boring romantic, that's me
But I've seen it all in a small town
Had myself a ball in a small town
Married an L.A. Doll and brought her to this small town
Now she's small town just like me
No, I cannot forget from where it is that I come from
I cannot forget the people who love me
Yeah, I can be myself here in this small town
And people let me be just what I want to be
Ooh nah, nah, nah, yeah, ooh yeah yeah
Got nothing against a big town
Still hayseed enough to say
Look who's in the big town
But my bed is in a small town
Oh, and that's good enough for me
Well, I was born in a small town
And I can breathe in a small town
Gonna die in a small town
Oh, and that's probably where they'll bury me, yeah
Ooh yeah yeah, yeah
Ooh yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
John Mellencamp's song "Small Town" is a reflection on the artist's lived experiences growing up in a small town in Indiana. The lyrics convey Mellencamp's appreciation for the comfort and familiarity that comes with living in a small community, as well as his frustrations with the limitations and lack of opportunities that are present in such settings. Mellencamp's first-hand accounts include his experiences of having been educated in a small town, being raised in a conservative, religious atmosphere, and facing limited job prospects. But at the same time, Mellencamp also acknowledges the inspiring experiences he has had and the connections he has made in the same community he was born and raised in. He is proud of his roots and feels grateful that he is able to be himself in his hometown.
The song is not limited to Mellencamp's personal experiences alone, as it is relatable and widely popular to many living in similar circumstances. The lyrics reflect the prevailing themes of small-town life such as familiarity, tradition, and community, which tie closely to individual identities. Thus, it's no surprise that the song has a unique power to drive emotions from listeners who share similar personal histories. It's a song that offers a powerful sentiment and nostalgia that transcends any genre or generation.

I’ll never forget driving around with my dad, brother, and sister. This song was on the radio and I looked around and we were all tapping along with the drum beat, either with our foot on the floor or our hand on the seat in front of us or with our hand hanging out the window, slapping the side of the car. My dad and brother are both gone now, but I’ll always think of them when I hear this song.

Sorry about your dad and brother, but it's fantastic you'll carry those memories around with you forever. I share similar memories with my dad. When I was a kid, cruising down the gravel roads, going 20mph, in no hurry, going to check on pastures/cattle or just going for a ride with nothing to do and listening to this (or other mellencamp or Bob Seger songs)...my dad is still here, turns 67 in just a few days, I'm 33, turning 34 in a month....crazy how fast time goes by. Gonna hit me hard when he passes away, but like I said, get to carry those memories with me forever.

I worked a John Cougar show in Dallas, TX in 1982. I worked back stage. I remember John came out before the show and talked to me for about 20 minutes. He is a super dude. Back then he went by John Cougar. He rocked the house that night!!! I will never forget that night.😊⚡🌟👍

As long as there are small towns in America this song will be timeless. It gives a sense of identity and community to a silent, working sector.

There are certain 80’s songs that give me an overwhelmingly painful and bittersweet sense of nostalgia. This is definitely one of them

Seriously know EXACTLY how you feel. I left a comment like this on Dragon’s ‘Younger Years’ video.

Yes, I watch Andy of Mayberry and I feel like I'm at home in Gibsons....it's like eating comfort food!
