Besides these two songs, five more of Montgomery's singles have reached the top of the country charts: "I Love the Way You Love Me", "Be My Baby Tonight", "If You've Got Love", "I Can Love You Like That", and "The Little Girl", while thirteen more have reached Top Ten. Montgomery's recordings of "I Swear" and "I Can Love You Like That" were both released concurrently with R&B versions by the group All-4-One. Montgomery has also released eleven studio albums, counting a Christmas album.
John Michael joined the family band (which also included his brother, Eddie Montgomery, who would later join Troy Gentry in the duo Montgomery Gentry) as guitarist before taking the lead singing role when his parents divorced. Afterwards, he made a frugal living on the local honky-tonk scene as a solo artist playing what he referred to as "working man's country." Eventually, Atlantic Records signed him.

They're talkin' 'bout war, they're talkin' 'bout peace
Talkin' 'bout you, talkin' 'bout me
The way we ought to act, yeah, the way we ought to be
They talk about stars and the latest styles
They don't talk about much that seems worthwhile, meanwhile
Me and my baby slip under the covers
Goin' on and start to workin' on
A little heart to heart an' mouth to mouth
That's what I'm talkin' about
All of our neighbors and most of our friends
They talk about Tiger, who's out and who's in
American Idol and who's gonna win
Now they'll talk about politics with their own little spin
Let 'em have their opinions, let 'em speak their minds
Let 'em talk about the weather 'cause come rain or shine
Me and my baby slip under the covers
Get away from the world and whatever other stuff is
Goin' on and start to workin' on
A little heart to heart an' mouth to mouth
That's what I'm talkin' about
Me and my baby slip under the covers
Get away from the world and whatever other stuff is
Goin' on and start to workin' on
A little heart to heart an' mouth to mouth
That's what I'm talkin' about
Ah, you know what I'm talkin' about
Little huggin', little kissin'
Little chasin', little catchin', lotta lovin'
Oh yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about
I'd like a candle on me honey
In John Michael Montgomery’s song, “That’s What I’m Talking About,” he expresses his frustration with the constant barrage of negativity and trivial topics in the media and among his peers. Radio and TV are discussing war, peace and how people should act and behave, yet they rarely touch on important and meaningful matters. Instead of surrendering to the noise around him, he chooses to escape with his significant other into their private world. Instead of engaging in meaningless dialogue with neighbors and friends about who's who and who's who's who, they opt for moments of tender intimacy. Montgomery stresses the significance of taking our attention away from the outside chaos and discovering the beauty we have with each other.
Montgomery urges listeners to disconnect from and ignore the distractions and noise of everyday life and instead focus on what really matters – love, connection, and intimacy between two people. A heart-to-heart conversation, a gentle touch, a passionate kiss – that’s what he’s talking about. He reiterates the importance of spending time with a loved one and cherishing the moments away from the constant outside noise.
