Fire In Me
John Newman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Never gonna let you go
I'm never gonna let you go

I'm starting with my intuition
I'm starting with my strengths
I'm getting back my old ambitions
Returning once again
My knuckles are so red and raw
From breaking through these walls
Sick of all the others talk
And I left her of my fault

I was a spark in the night but you drown me out
So I'll take the walls inside and I'll burn them down

'Cause I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me

I've debt with all my evils
And I'm dealing with them twice
There will never be a sequal
And the curtain will never rise
Although my body has been aching
I held on to the ropes, oh no
I've never left the ring, yeah
And I won't be letting go

'Cause I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me

I was a spark in the night but you drown me out
So I'll take the walls I'm inside and I'll burn them down
I was a spark in the night but you drown me out
So I'll take the walls I'm inside and I'll burn them down

'Cause I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me
I never wanna let it go
I never wanna let it go
I-I-I-I still got a fire in me

I-I-I-I still got a fire in me

Overall Meaning

In John Newman's song "Fire In Me," the artist sings about his determination to hold on to his inner strength and ambition. He acknowledges that he has faced obstacles and challenges that have left him bruised and aching, but he is not willing to let go of the fire inside him that still burns bright. He declares that he will break through the walls that have held him back and never let anyone or anything drown out his spark again.

The lyrics suggest that the artist has come to a point in his life where he has had to face his demons and deal with his weaknesses. However, instead of allowing them to bring him down, he has used them as fuel to ignite his passion and pursue his goals. He is determined to hold on to his intuition and strengths and not be swayed by what others say or think. He acknowledges his past mistakes but has moved forward and will not let anyone extinguish the fire that burns inside him.

Overall, "Fire In Me" is an empowering and motivational song that encourages listeners to hold on to their inner strength and never let their fire die out.

As someone who thinks this song is a walking billboard for terrible pop songs i can elucidate why

1. Every pop song has the exact same formula; intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus x 2. This is no different.

2. The overall sound is the same poppy sound we've heard since the early 2000s and uses the same 4 5 1 chord progression all pop songs rely on. This song is no different.

3. Theres nothing innovative here. Theres nothing changing the landscape of music, nothing reinvigorating an instruments capabilities and limits, nothing that makes you go 'wow i have never heard this before'. Its a carbon copy of nearly every pop song.

Theres a great clip of ed Sheehan playing the same chords to show how every pop song uses the same shit. He does it, but acknowledges the issues.

No one here is reinventing the wheel or doing anything other musicians can't. The only reason this one happened to be more famous is because of the independent effort put in by the artist/management.

Pop music is marketing, not art or even music. Its all about psychology and how to play to the fact that most people like repetitive, over done phrases. Hence why we have had the same formula for decades and the same topics; love, life, loss, etc.. its about the marketing, not the talent or creativity.

@TRUEBASSMASTERV

Just an inspiration poem thnx to this video.

You can try to put out my light,
and send me into the dark,
but I don't plan to stay there for long,
because I still have a fire burning deep inside my heart.

You can challenge me at every step,
knock me down,
and I'll keep getting back up,
try your hardest to stop me,
and I'll just find a way to make it through,
because the flames are burning deep within me.

I'm explosive, and I won't let you keep me down!
I'm explosive and I won't let you keep me down!

It's so underated - how do people not see how good this song is???!!! - It's because they don't have that fire in them - But I still got that fire in me!

@charlieamorris04

@Miles not really, plenty of songs without all that flexing that are appreciated

@themusikguySPECIAL

Such a perfect comeback single! Powerful vocals, insanely catchy and very uplifting, inspirational lyrics. Already one of the best songs of 2018. John Newman always delivers - and still the charts are paying him dust. There's so much bad music on the UK charts right now and such a masterpiece of a song struggles to get inside the Top 100?! John Newman deserves so much more success. Hopefully the third album is on the way, for us fans who support him. Go buy the song!

Perfect comment!!

@garethscott8888

its the kids that listen to shit music like despacito or gangnam style, music that gets air time now is either full of sex or drugs or crappy autotune rap shite, music with passion and soul are becoming forgotten saly.

@adamjobs5222

@Gareth Scott I thought I have just dreamt gangnam style...

@gravitytwo4088

@Gareth Scott I listen mostly to late 60's, 70's, early 80's music because of this. After those decades, soulful and passionate music is harder to find through the decades.....

@getin3949

I LOVE John's voice, I feel his passion.

My Dearest John! This has been a tough year for me. Among the many challenging things surrounding me, one of them is the process of finishing my PhD, the public defence of which will take place coming Tuesday (30th June). Your song has helped me to dig out the almost dried up reservoir of energy and faith – “I never want to let it go. I still got the fire in me”. Keep your fingers crossed.
