Olé
John Newman Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lowkey, you won't tell none of your friends about me
You won't tell them I occupy your dreams and your thoughts
Look at what we have started
I feel so good when I leave your apartment

I know, there's no telling how far you can go
And you don't want to hear about my love and my lust
Babe that I have been feeling
I kiss you once, then I stare at the ceiling

Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day
My day

My heart speaks
I ain't seen you or been with you for weeks
But I see online that you've begun to be
A good girl and take trips with your boyfriend
Being attentive, continue to pretend

But no, 'cause there's no telling how far you can go
You've hidden my name on your phone so you can
Call me to tell me you've been going through hell
Left him alone and you booked in a hotel

Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day
My day

I can't control myself around you
I can't control myself around you
I can't control myself around you
I can't control myself around you
I can't control myself around you
I can't control myself around you

And I'm singing Olé,
You bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away
You bring too much sunlight to my day
My day

Olé, you bring too much sunlight to my day
And only you can chase the pain away

You bring too much sunlight to my day
My day

Overall Meaning

"Olé" by John Newman tells the story of a tumultuous romantic relationship, where the singer is involved with someone who seems to be keeping their affair a secret. The lyrics suggest that the person the singer is involved with won't tell anyone about their relationship, even though they occupy their dreams and thoughts. Despite this secrecy, the singer feels amazing when they are together and leaves the person's apartment feeling good.

The singer acknowledges that there seems to be a limit to how far their relationship can go, as the person they are involved with doesn't want to hear about the singer's love and lust for them. The singer hints at a passionate connection in the line "I kiss you once, then I stare at the ceiling," implying that their encounters are intense. However, the other person seems to be leading a double life, pretending to be a good girl and taking trips with their boyfriend, even though they call the singer to confess they've been going through a difficult time.

Despite the complications and the other person's mixed signals, the singer cannot control their feelings and is drawn to them uncontrollably. The chorus repeats the idea that this person brings sunlight and happiness to their day and has the power to chase away the singer's pain.

Overall, "Olé" portrays a forbidden love affair filled with secrecy and emotional turmoil, where the singer craves the other person's presence despite the difficulties they face.

This song was legitimately my summer song in 2016.
I didn't think it was possible to feel nostalgic for something that was almost three years ago

I don't understand why people hate this song. In this era where every pop song has the same rhythm and style, John make something different. I listen to Olé because there's no other similar song on the airplay. And this is good.

Autotune started from Cher (Believe)... The problem is that it was used as an effect, not as a "corrector". He was/is a good singer. The problem is that the software became a way to sing without be able to sing :-(
