He started playing guitar and writing his own songs at the age of 14 and soon learned how to record and produce himself, even making his own house tracks and DJing. At 20 he moved to London, started a band, played live and got signed to Island Records.
His second album, Revolve, was released in 2015. The lead single, Come and Get It, was released on 17th July 2015.
His older brother, James Newman represented United Kingdom in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 with the song Embers, which ended on a 26th and last place with nul points.

In the song "Try," John Newman talks about how much he has been working hard and how much of it he is doing alone, with so much going on, he feels as though he is heading astray, but it does not seem to bother those around him. However, he states that he will make them stronger because he can now see the fake people who use him. He acknowledges that it is the person he will fight for who is saving him. Even though there was not much communication between them, it seems to be enough to keep them united.
John Newman is aware that he has been breaking his home for far too long, and he apologizes for it, promising to try and fight for the love that they had before.
