I'm Always Chasing Rainbows

Watching clouds drifting by
My schemes are just like all my dreams
Ending in the sky
Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain
Some fellows make a winning sometimes
I never even make a gain
Waiting to find a little bluebird in vain
I'm always chasing rainbows
Watching clouds drifting by
My schemes are just like all my dreams
Ending in the sky
Some fellows look and find the sunshine
I always look and find the rain
Some fellows make a winning sometimes
I never even make a gain
Believe me, I'm always chasing rainbows
The lyrics of John Payne's song "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" talk about the constant search for happiness and fulfillment that seems to elude the singer's grasp. The metaphor of chasing rainbows is used to depict the elusive nature of his dreams and how they continuously slip away, leaving him with nothing more than failed schemes and missed opportunities. Despite his efforts to find a little bluebird, a symbol of hope and good luck, he always ends up in vain.
The line "Some fellows look and find the sunshine, I always look and find the rain" speaks to the different attitudes that people can have towards life, with some being naturally optimistic and others more pessimistic. The singer seems to fall into the latter category, always seeing the negative side of things and being unable to experience success or a sense of achievement. The song is a poignant commentary on the human condition, where the pursuit of happiness can often be futile and unattainable.

John Payne and Betty Grable are two of the best and underrated actors from Hollywood's Golden Age. Their performance of "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows" stands alongside Judy Garland's performance of the song as one of the very best recordings ever.
@viaburgos
Agreed. They deserve more love if you ask me!
