Saillin' Around
John Prine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sailin' around, Sailin' around, Sailin' around,
I've been out sailin' around again
I've been sailin' around
But I can't get back to you

Hangin' around, Hangin' around, Hangin' around
I've been out hangin' around again
I've been hangin' around
But I can't get back to you

So tell where you been so long (sailin' around)
What have I done so wrong? (sailin' around)
Well, I'm so glad I finally found you
I can't wait to put my arms around you
Sailin' around, but I can't get back to you

Shoppin' around, Shoppin' around, Shoppin' around,
I've been shoppin' around again
I've been shoppin' around
But I can't get back to you

So tell where you been so long (sailin' around)
What have I done so wrong? (sailin' around)
Well, I'm so glad I finally found you
I can't wait to put my arms around you
Sailin' around, but I can't get back to you

Sailin' around, Sailin' around, Sailin' around,
I've been sailin' around again
I've been sailin' around but I can't get back to you.

I've been sailin' around but I can't get back to you.
I've been sailin' around but I can't get back to you.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Prine's song "Sailin' Around" tell the story of a man who has been away from his lover for too long, indulging himself in various activities like sailing, hanging out and shopping around. Despite all his wanderings, he still cannot find the way back to his lover. He asks her where she has been and what he did wrong to make her go away for so long. He finds her and is excited to put his arms around her but the irony is that he still cannot get back to her.

The lyrics are melancholic and convey the feeling of separation and longing. The verses are repetitive, emphasizing the circular nature of the man's journey, which ultimately leads him back to his starting point. Prine's lyrics are simple, yet poignant, evoking a sense of nostalgia and regret.

I love so many of John Prine’s songs. Many are deep and meaningful, some are fun and hilarious. But am currently stuck with this one. Simple and beautiful. His voice, the harmony, and that little repeated downward pattern in the guitar - just stuck in my head.
