Ghosts
John R. Miller and the Wolves Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Down!

Breaking the lines and bury what's coming
This common sense you're ignoring
'Cause you're next up to fall out with not dealing
With all the doubt you still are not facing

Forget the world's reaction to this
Chemical attraction that I've
Always known but never could savor

Press play repeat then start the cycle
That's been feeding on me
Everyday I keep digging a deeper grave

In God we
Mistrusted
The truth left
All of us disgusted

A toast to the ghosts in our home
Still alive
Gave all they had for a flag
But the dream has died
But the dream has died

I think that you've said enough
No thank you for warning us
So obvious my mistake

You think that I won't give up
I've gone and I've had enough
So what I've left miles away

In God we
Mistrusted
The truth left
All of us disgusted

A toast to the ghosts in our home
Still alive
Gave all they had for a flag
But the dream has died
But the dream has died
But the dream has died

In God we
Mistrusted

In God we
Mistrusted

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Ghosts by John R. Miller and the Wolves delve into themes of denial, doubt, disappointment, and loss of faith. The first few lines of the song speak to the avoidance of a looming problem, where the singer chooses to bury the issue instead of dealing with it. The chorus, "In God we mistrusted, the truth left all of us disgusted," suggests a loss of faith in a higher power or authority figure. The ghosts mentioned in the song are likely symbols for the memory of those who have fallen or died for a cause, with the dream (potentially the American Dream) represented by the flag now deceased.

The line "Chemical attraction that I've always known but never could savor" could be a metaphor for a desire that the singer recognizes but is unable to fulfill. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the sense of disillusionment and frustration, questioning the very foundations on which the singer's beliefs were built. Despite this, there is a hint of admiration or respect for the ghosts, who gave all they had for something bigger than themselves and their sacrifice should not be forgotten. The final repetition of "In God we mistrusted" could also signify a final abandonment of faith or hope.
