Rowles was born to a Maori father and Pakeha (Caucasian) mother in Whakatane, New Zealand, and grew up in Kawerau, New Zealand. His older brother Wally Rowles was a solo singer with his own career (for a while he went under the name of Frankie Price then later Frankie Rowles). His sister, Tania Rowles, was a recording artist and had the single "Don't Turn Around" which was released on the RCA label in 1986. Rowles still occasionally performs in New Zealand and Australia.

Say Goodbye
John Rowles Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
You'd be hurt so much more if you stay.
Can't you see,don't you see,it's all over.
You'd be far better off,go away.
Go away,find a way,to forget me.
To be cruel is often to be kind.
There's no chance,not a chance,
Won't you lock the door and leave the key behind.
Say goodbye,say goodbye,not tomorrow,
Like i've told you from the start it wouldn't
Last, when you're safe and secure like forever,
Make it easy on yourself,
Say goodbye,say goodbye,say goodbye.
The lyrics to John Rowles's song Say Goodbye tell a story of a person who is urging their partner to leave and say goodbye forever. The singer is convinced that if the partner stays, they will only get hurt and that it's in their best interest to move on. The singer is adamant that their relationship is over and there is no chance of reconciliation, stating that the partner should forget them and find a new way of life.
The song's lyrics convey a feeling of finality, with the singer insisting that there is no chance of rekindling the relationship. The lines "To be cruel is often to be kind" suggest that the singer believes that ending the relationship sooner rather than later will ultimately be the best thing for both parties, even if it's a hard truth to swallow. "You'd be far better off, go away" encapsulates this sentiment perfectly, showing that the singer believes their partner's best course of action is to leave and never look back.
Overall, Say Goodbye is a melancholy song that tells a relatable story of ending a failed relationship. The song's simple melody and emotive lyrics ensure that it remains a classic ballad that many listeners can relate to.

The greatest voice I have ever heard. His fame should have been in the stratosphere......deep sigh!...... He wasted his time, youth, and God given mega talent singing in nightclubs in Hawaii.
