Born in London, he was educated at Highgate School, where a fellow pupil was John Tavener. He then studied music at Clare College, Cambridge, where he was organ scholar and then director of music from 1975 to 1979. In 1981 he founded his own choir, the Cambridge Singers, which he conducts and with which he has made many recordings of sacred choral repertoire (including his own works), particularly under his own label Collegium Records. He still lives near Cambridge, but frequently conducts other choirs and orchestras around the world.
In 1980 he was made an honorary Fellow of Westminster Choir College, Princeton, and in 1988 a Fellow of the Guild of Church Musicians. In 1996 the Archbishop of Canterbury conferred a Lambeth Doctorate of Music upon him in recognition of his contribution to church music.
He also works as an arranger and editor, most notably (in his youth) of the extraordinarily successful Carols for Choirs anthology series in collaboration with Sir David Willcocks.

At a very dark time in my life, in 1990, I was out of town. I got into my car and found a cassette tape of Rutter, mysteriously and anonymously stuck under my windshield wiper. I listened to it, and it changed everything. It could not have been a coincidence.

During a very troubling time for our congregation, our brilliant choir director integrated this in one of our Sunday Mass services. We had an excellent choir at the time which handled the subtleties of this piece perfectly. Our interim Rector who was always unflappable, became so choked up that he could barely get out the dismissal. We, in the choir, and most of the congregation were crying in our seats and there was dead silence at the end of the service. No one wanted to leave that moment in our lives.

I absolutely adore this exquisite piece, and, indeed, the whole requiem. I went to John Rutter's 'Come and Sing' events in Derby Cathedral in 2011. To sing the complete Requiem with the composer conducting it was truly one of the best experiences of my life.

Seriously great recording - very atmospheric, real intensity, full of character, heartfelt playing from the orchestra really shines through too.

I AM SO GLAD THAT A HUMAN OR DIVINE ANGEL GAVE YOUR RUTTER, HE UNDERSTANDS THE JOURNEY FROM DARK TO LIGHT THAT ALL HUMANS TRAVEL. IF WE ONLY HAD MUSIC LIFE WOULD BE WORTH LIVING JUST TO LISTEN TO ITS BEAUTY BUT THINK OF HOW MUCH BEAUTY THERE IS TO SEE AND TO SMELL AND TO TASTE AND TO SHARE WITH LOVERS AND OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN. WHAT A GREAT GIFT HUMAN LIFE IS FROM OUR DIVINE FATHER AND MOTHER GOD.
@MisterMalleable
I enjoy every note of this movement with its journey from darkness to light

Exactly me too, John Rutter did it just right

I have just been to a service of commemorative reflection at Wells Cathedral and heard this for the second time in nearly 6 months. The last time was when John Rutter himself was there and this was one of the pieces of which a thousand voices of choristers sung it. Amongst other things. That was earlier in this year.

Wonderfull! Maravilhoso! Bravo!
