His father is a Morris dancer. He attended John Mason School in Abingdon, and then went on to study genetics at King's College, Cambridge. As a child he learned the organ and piano and when he was a university student he began to play the piano accordion and melodeon. After spending some time busking he started a new career selling melodeons. He now plays with the duo Spiers and Boden and the band Bellowhead, as well as being part of Eliza Carthy's band The Ratcatchers. He and his partner have a son and a daughter.

John also features on the following CDs:
- Sea Shanties (2002) (The Gift of Music) - also featuring Jon Boden, Ian Giles and Graham Metcalfe.
- Folk Music of England (1999) (The Gift of Music) - also featuring Amber Quartet, Dragonsfire, Ian Giles, Dr Faustus.

Dean Martin always drank "Apple. It wasn't until his son "Dino died in the F-4 Phantom II jet fighter crash that Dean Martin was so depressed he started drinking at that time.
What a nightmare for Dean during that time.

I remember seeing this when I was in my 20s. This had me laughing so hard and shedding tears that so many legendary people are no longer with us. Lucy was an awesome performer and seeing her taking all the jibes from her peers was awesome to see again. I forgot how funny Foster Brooks was. A great and funny comedian in his own right. @electrictroy2010 if you look carefully, there are very few shots of Jack Benny on the dais during the roast, and those that are there, show him sort of slumped at the table. When he is introduced by Dean Martin to speak, the shot of Mr. Benny walking to the podium is exactly the same footage as when he is brought into the room at the beginning of the roast, and upon his completing his comments, there's no perfunctory handshake/greeting with Dean Martin, or reaching over to kiss Lucille Ball or at the very least, shake her hand. It immediately cuts to Dean introducing the next performer. Clearly, Mr. Benny was not doing well at all, but what a tribute to his friend Lucille Ball that he made the effort to be there for her night.

Loved watching these as a kid, they were great! Especially liked Foster Brooks in this one!, he had me laughing all the way through. Really had me laughing hard when he was looking at Lucille and called her “Luce”, then he instantly turned and looked at Dean and said, that’s what the football team called her. Hahahahaha he’s a riot. Totie Fields killed it too! Good times.

It’s really late at night and I’ve been laughing this whole last hour. It reminds me that there is still humor in this life. Humor is timeless. That’s why this program is still funny no matter when you watch it. If we want to hear comedians like this again, then it’s up to us as the public to encourage them. Bob's joke was hilarious, but a member of the Roast's wonderfully talented comedy writing staff probably came up with that great line. Nonetheless, Bob's timing and delivery was masterful, no doubt about that. But to fully appreciate the joke you have to know who Earl Scheib was. Earl Scheib was once a household name in the 1950s through the 1980s. "I'm Earl Scheib, and I'll paint any car, any color for $29.95. No ups, no extras"--was the pitch that Earl himself presented on TV ads that he wrote himself. The brand name is still around and there are Earl Scheib body and paint shops operating today in California, although they are independently owned now.

She was absolutely beautiful and an absolute brilliant comedic actress, plus a fantastic businesswoman who thankfully gave us hundreds of hours of joyful entertainment. Was she funny? Yes! And no. Watch her interviews with Cavett or Carson. She’s not “off the cuff” funny. She isn’t quick with a funny line or an entertaining storyteller. She was indeed a great actress. So great in fact, that after 4(?) sitcoms, we tend to think of her as The Queen of Comedy. She deserves every accolade for ILL, and the development of television as we know it, and for all the great business decisions made at Desilu. But she isn’t a “funny” woman. She used perfect timing with splendid physical comic ability and fantastic facial expressions to give us hours and hours of laughs and “perfect” television, no doubt, but she was not a “funny” person. She was a great Actress. Mr Gordon was correct, Viv and Carol truly were, as comediennes, funnier than our beloved Lucy. I don’t intend this as a negative slam on Ms Ball. She was, and is, the greatest. But that’s acting ability, not exactly the same as comic ability. After that diatribe- I do in fact Love Lucy

@James Feldman a little-known fact about Foster: He had a learning disability which was so severe he only got through the 6th grade. He couldn’t memorize scripts. That’s why he only had bit parts on sitcoms and never played a main character in a movie. But when he was allowed to ad lib, like here, he was a comedic genius.

This was so good and they all had fun and joked with each other expertly without a single swear word. Thats comedy genius really. While I’m not a prude and don’t have an issue with comedians these days swearing I have to say watching this I was reminded that good comedy can be had without swearing at all.

What's more their jokes weren't exactly PG jokes many of them were x rated but they knew how to deliver them with class and by using the imagination, also showing that the old timers themselves were not prudes either. The jokes were for adults but delivered without being crass or vulgar.

This roast was taped in October 1974 and aired a little over a month after Jack Benny died. Benny looked tired and considerably thinner. In fact, I'm not sure he was at the dais for very long. This was his final TV appearance.

I was born in 74 so I wouldn't of been able to watch these roasts but I do remember my parents watching them as I got older. I love seeing all these legends on stage. Watched the whole thing and it holds up decades later. The jokes are tremendous and there are no boundaries, they did not need swear words to get laughs. Amazing.

This had to be taped before late 1974. Jack Benny died the day after Christmas, 1974. These were good people and I remember watching them as a child. I could understand little of what they were talking about but I enjoyed it all the same.

I was pretty young, but I remember these clearly. I thought these great old stars would be around forever. I'm so glad I'm from a generation who knows and remembers all these one of kind stars from entertainments golden age. It's a mortal sin for any of the younger generations to know nothing of them.

I just watched 3 of the comedy central roasts and barely let out a giggle....I just watched this and almost had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard....its very sad that these days are over but Im so thankfull we can still watch and enjoy them!

I was 12yo when this came on prime time TV. Maybe some of the "stars" of today should watch this to see how real comedy is done. Without a lot of F-bombs and GD's every other word !! SOOO REFRESHING to see and hear some great insult jokes so tastefully done !!

My favorite bit from this is at 41:13 - 41:27 when Don Rickles finally got to meet Henry Fonda...honestly that killed me and had me dyin laughing everytime

My mom got me into the "I Love Lucy" show when I was a kid. I'm now a huge collector of anything related to that famous redhead. Her autograph (COA), dolls, figurines, Christmas ornaments, every vhs & dvd, her postage stamp, etc etc etc. Drove to her hometown 2x and have flown there also. She passed away when I was a teen. I'll always be a fan. I Love You Lucy!! RIP <3

Dean never was drunk. He would never have been able to golf daily early in the a.m. - and golf on the same level as Sam Snead and Arnold Palmer, host a massively successful TV show that ran for 10 years, carry on a very successful recording career, raise and train Andalusian horses, act in movies, spend time with his 8 kids .... if he had an alcohol problem. A smoking problem he did have, unfortunately.

Dean usually wasn't drinking on stage. He was a consummate professional. As soon as he left the stage, he got shit hammered and stayed that way until his next show.
