Change
John Waite Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

People talking
And they're saying that you're leaving
So unhappy
With the way that you've been living

Oh oh oh
We always wish for money
We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers

Some things ain't ever gonna change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

Look in the mirror
And you see how you've been taken
You won't surrender
But now your heart is breakin'

Oh oh oh
We always wish for money
We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers

Some things ain't ever gonna change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

Do you remember
When you got your lucky break
You're looking back now
And it seems like a mistake

Oh oh oh
We always wish for money
We always wish for fame
We think we have the answers

Some things ain't ever gonna change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

It's only change (change)
It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will never change

It doesn't matter who you are
It's all the same (change)
What's in your heart will stay the same
It doesn't matter who you are

It's all the same (what¹s in your heart)
It's only
It's only
It's only change

Never (it doesn't matter)
You ain't gonna
You ain't gonna change (what's in your heart)
You ain't gonna change

Doesn't matter who you are

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Waite's song Change are about the inevitability of change and the desire for things like money and fame. The first verse speaks of people talking about leaving and being unhappy with their current situation. This is followed by the chorus, which repeats the idea that we always wish for money and fame and think we have the answers, but some things will never change. The second verse speaks of looking in the mirror and realizing the heartbreak and surrender that has taken place. The bridge speaks of looking back on a lucky break and realizing it may have been a mistake. The final chorus repeats the idea that what's in your heart will never change, regardless of who you are.

On one level, the song speaks to human aspirations for a better life and the pitfalls of chasing after things like money and fame. On a deeper level, it can be seen as a meditation on the fact that everything changes except for what is deepest within us.

John is a genuine treasure!! The kind of bread they don't make anymore. Fantastic songwriter, singer, musician, arranger, frontman.
May it be with The Babys, Bad English or Solo.
Very few songwriters/artists make me pay that much attention to the lyrics as John does. There are a lot of lines in a lot of songs that take my breath away...

I have a soft spot for "In Dreams":

"....Sunshine knocking on my window
Couldn't wake me from this dream (we dream)
'Cause baby anywhere the wind blows
I will follow you
It seems
That in my life
I still believe in dreams...."

2020 and this song still rocks. The 20 people who disliked it, however, clearly never appreciated the 80's. ♥

Todays music all of it does nothing for me . yesterdays 70s 80s some 90s takes your mind on a good trip and you feel it and feel better 👍

The 20 dislikes did not grow up in the 80's. I'm 56 and I know that for a fact. You have to live through it to experience how life was back then. I was 15 before MTV came out. I can say this. We had good music and I like ALL 80's music whether good or bad.
