Larry Vaughn (Murray Hamilton) was so right when he said, "It's all psychological." And it is. Properly, sharks cannot fit into bathtubs, or shower drains. Nor will they come up through toilet plumbing. But rational thought and sharks don't go together. You hear the word SHARK along with that music and it's all primal.

Giant Giant I generally shower but I can't get near a body of water for a good hour after hearing that score. And I'm scared to death of drinking anything (iced tea, pop, Frappucino, whatever) during the flic, for fear I'll have to go to the bathroom.

Mayor Vaughn was right, it IS psychological! That score goes to the very core of fear. Even people who never saw the movie would jump at a certain point in the main theme.

I remember one Jaws doc where someone said that if he played the music in a gazeebo on a beach, there'd be a mass exodus out of the water.

The musical score of Jaws is so incredible, and it plays such a big part in the movie. The music starts slow, and it increases in intensity as you can suspect that the shark is nearby or approaching. The eerie music mixed with the camerawork is tension and suspense at its finest. Jaws is as one of the very few movies where the music alone can scare the audience, and no other movie really does that quite as well

And people just went crazy in the auditorium. Actually on the edge of their seats with hands over eyes. At the end they stood up and cheered! I feel like a huge amount of why this score is awesome is how it builds. It starts out simple, two notes. Then it slowly but surely adds new themes and parts in eventually building to a crescendo. But underneath it all is the same two notes driving the piece forward. In that way, I think it was perfect for the nature of the shark they portrayed, that of a creature that thrives in a habitat that no human could survive very long in. And once you enter that habitat, it's only a matter of time until it gets you. In a way, the music reflects the mounting sense of panic and desperation as the protagonists are slowly but surely stripped of all ideas, and then weapons. Finally, at the climax, there is nothing left, but one man desperately clinging to the mast of a sinking ship, shooting and praying that he might be granted a miracle to defeat the monster that has plagued him and his town.

One of my all-time favorite movies, and, yes, it's very scary in places, but I love the actors--all of them--especially the three guys on the boat, and how those three guys especially put their own wit into the dialogue. And the music. It's great fun to see all those instruments playing the music I'm used to hearing in the movie or on CD. JAWS was the first John Williams OST I bought and it remains one of my favorites of his scores, just as JAWS is one of my favorites of Spielberg's movies.

Ahh. When that ominous melody kicks in at 1:18, it's so grand. This score - and of course Williams' other work over the following couple of decades - changed the entire film score landscape. Before Jaws, all we had was Mancini- and Bernstein-esque scores which sounded like the decades they came from. And today, after Williams, just about the only thing we have is those driving, harmony-starved waltzes from Zimmer.
