True Blue
John Williamson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey True Blue, don't say you've gone
Say you've knocked off for a smoko
And you'll be back la-ater on
Hey True Blue, Hey True Blue

Give it to me straight, face to face
Are you really disappearing
Just another dying race
Hey True Blue

[Chorus]
True Blue, is it me and you
Is it Mum and Dad, is it a cockatoo
Is it standin' by your mate when he's in a fight
Or just Vegemi-ite
True Blue, I'm a-asking you

Hey True Blue, can you bear the load
Will you tie it up with wire
Just to keep the show on the road
Hey True Blue
Hey True Blue, now be Fair Dinkum

Is your heart still there
If they sell us out like sponge cake
Do you really care
Hey True Blue

[Chorus: x2]

Overall Meaning

"True Blue" by John Williamson is a classic Australian song that celebrates the Australian identity and way of life. The song is a conversation between two mates, with one mate asking the other if they are truly loyal to their Australian identity and values. The song expresses the fear and concern that the Australian identity is disappearing and becoming replaced by outside influences.

The lyrics contain several references to Australian culture and customs. For example, the mention of "smoko" refers to a work break for smoke and tea, and "Fair Dinkum" is an Australian term for honesty and integrity. The chorus asks what it means to be "True Blue," and suggests that it might be standing up for your mates in a fight, or just enjoying a simple Australian pleasure like Vegemite on toast.

The song reflects a nostalgia for a simpler time, when the Australian identity was more defined and the country was less influenced by global trends. The song became an instant hit upon its release in 1981, and has become an iconic part of Australian culture.

This guy is amazing. I am in the United States but when I hear this song I wish so much I was Australian. I have turned so many of my friends on to John Williamson. I hope all you Australians appreciate the talent you have in this man.

U would probably like Paul Kelly too. He tells such vivid stories in his songs, sometimes the small stuff, sometimes big stuff like land rights & racism. Practically every aussie listens to his song HOW TO MAKE GRAVY@ xmas & we're not afraid to get teary over it.

I'm Australian in Missouri. I cry everytime I hear this song. It used to be like this 😔 but not anymore 😭

@@maryfarrar1286 how long have u been away & what do u mean "it's not like this anymore" what's different.? I'm genuinely curious 🤔

@maryfarrar1286

@@jadecawdellsmith4009 I left in 1991. Living in Missouri ever since. I keep in touch through Facebook, I see the comments. As with everywhere right now, it's not the same. Don't know where you live, but it's not the same as how I remember. I could probably explain more if I knew where you were from. They are pushing the same as they are in California, if you know what I mean.

@@maryfarrar1286 So sad, and so true. Mary I don't know if we will ever be able to go back to what we once were.
