Too Tired
Johnny Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah!
I laid down last night, too tired to wake.
I had a chill this morning, too tired to shake.
I got a good poker hand, too tired to win.
I can hear my baby knockin', too tired to let her in.

I'm tired.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, I'm tired.
Too tired, too tired for anything.

I'm too tired to walk,
too tired to run.
I can hear my baby callin'.
Too tired, too tired,
I'm tired.
Yes, I'm tired.
I'm tired,
I'm too tired for anything.

Take over Albert, I'm too tired for this!

I'm tired of prospherity.
I'm tired of luck.
I'm sittin' on a pin,
I'm too tired to get up.

I'm tired.
I declare I'm tired.
I'm too tired,
too tired for anything.

Oh, Albert I'm tired.

You better take over Albert.
I'm too tired baby.

Overall Meaning

Johnny 'Guitar' Watson's song "Too Tired" is a blues classic that tells a story about a man who is simply too exhausted to do anything. In the beginning of the song, Watson explains how he was too tired to wake up and had a chill in the morning that he couldn't shake. He also mentions that he has a good poker hand, but he's too tired to win. This indicates that he's lost his motivation and is feeling hopeless. Then, he hears a knock on his door, but he can't even muster up the energy to let his lover in. The chorus of the song repeats how tired he is and how he can't do anything.

The next verse shows how tired he truly is, as he's too tired to even walk or run. His lover is calling out to him, but he's still too tired to acknowledge her. He's tired of everything - of prosperity, luck, and even sitting on a pin. The last part of the song is a plea to his friend Albert to take over because he's too tired for anything. This final line summarizes how defeated and depleted he feels.

The song "Too Tired" is a poignant commentary on a feeling that many of us can relate to - being too tired to do anything. The song is a testament to the human struggle when life is just too hard and we're running on empty.

The original lyrics at 1:06 had Johnny "too tired to come" but you know how censors and radio program directors were back in the 50s.

The single was released in July of 1955, probably cut earlier in the year. It's on the Hot Like TNT: The Early Years compilation album.
