Golden Touch
Johnny Borrell/Razorlight Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I know a girl with the golden touch
She's got enough, she's got too much
But I know, you wouldn't mind
You could have it all if you wanted
You could have it all if it mattered so much

But then all they know is how to put you down
When you're there, they're your friend
But then when you're not around
They say, "Oh, she's changed"
We know what they mean
Well they mean, they're just jealous
Because they never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well

That kind of girl, yes, she's never alone
You leave a thousand messages on her phone
But you know you never get through
And you could have it all if you wanted, girl
You could have it all if it matters to you

But then all they know is how to put you down
When you're there, they're your friend
But then when you're not around
They say, "Oh, she's changed"
We know what at means
Well it means, they're just jealous
But they'll never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well

I saw my girl with the golden touch
Give 'em a taste but not too much
I just can't listen to the words of fools
But don't give away too much
Someone will need your golden touch

Because then all they know is how to put you down
When you're there, they're your friend
Oh, then when you're not around
They say, "Oh, she's changed"
We know what they mean
Well it means, they're just jealous
They'll never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well

Because then all they know is how to put you down
When you're there, they're your friend
Oh, when you're not around
They say, "Oh, she's changed"
Oh, I know what that means
Well it means, they're just jealous
They'll never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well

No, they'll never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well
They'll never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well

No, they'll never do the things
That they wish that they could do so well

Overall Meaning

In Johnny Borrell/Razorlight’s song ‘Golden Touch’, the lyrics describe a girl who possesses a certain charm that everyone wants to have. The first and second sentences of the song refer to how the girl has so much to offer that she could give some away, yet still have plenty left. Borrell sings that the people around her try to put her down, but it’s just because they are jealous of the things she can do so well. The third verse seems more personal and brings in the singer's experience with the girl with a golden touch. They sing of leaving a thousand messages on her phone, but to no avail since she’s always surrounded by people. However, they note that she should cherish this gift of hers, but not give too much of herself away, since someone will always need her golden touch.

Borrell’s lyrics in ‘Golden Touch’ represent a common theme in society: the way people try to bring others down when they feel jealous or envious of them. He shows that individuals may be friendly and accommodating when the person is around, but the moment they are out of sight, they start whispering and spreading rumors. The song also portrays how people often desire to have what others have, but may not possess the same skills or abilities. Finally, the song notes how people tend to glorify individuals that have something unique, but those unique traits are what also make them difficult to approach and maintain relationships with.

This song sounded absolutely incredible way back in the day, and it still sounds just as incredible today.

Johnny's vocals were outstanding, and so was the music.

In my own opinion, Razorlight were a band that should of achieved far more recognision and success then they recieved.

A very very underrated band.

15 years 😩 I’m 31 now. Razor light and The Kooks songs bring me back to a favourite time in my life. It’s crazy how much has changed and how much I’ve changed.
