Bristol and singing partner Jackey Beavers recorded two singles in 1959 for Anna Records, a label owned by Gwen Gordy (Berry Gordy's sister) and Billy Davis and four 45s for Gwen Gordy and Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi label, none of which was a success beyond the Midwestern United States.

Recorded in the early 1960s for Harvey Fuqua's Tri-Phi label in Detroit, Michigan as "Johnny & Jackey". When Tri-Phi was absorbed by Motown in the mid-1960s, Bristol became Fuqua's songwriting and production partner, working on material for Motown artists such as Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell ("If I Could Build My Whole World Around You"), Edwin Starr ("Twenty-Five Miles"), David Ruffin ("My Whole World Ended (The Moment You Left Me"), and others. On his own, Bristol produced hits such as "Someday We'll Be Together" for Diana Ross and the Supremes and "I Don't Want to Do Wrong" and "Daddy Could Swear, I Declare" for Gladys Knight and the Pips.

When Motown left Detroit for Los Angeles in 1972, Bristol moved over to MGM Records, where he resumed his career as a recording artist. He released several successful R&B hits, among them "You and I" (1974), and "Leave My World" (1975), as well as the top ten pop hit "Hang In There Baby" (1974). Bristol continued his career a a solo artist and an independent producer into the early 1990s. Bristol's last releases were a 12" single in 1991 for Whichway Records, "Come to Me", and an album, Life & Love, released for the Japanese market in 1993. The latter included Earth, Wind & Fire's "That's The Way I Feel About You" as a duet with his daughter, Shanna J. Bristol. The album received a US release three years later under the title Come To Me.

He died at the age of 65 in his home in Michigan in 2004.

I was there back pre 9/11. A friend and I stood next to one and took our pics with him. He was actually very cool and whispered (jokingly) to stand on the other side of him. He said that was his good side. We laughed and complied. Never thought about getting in his personal space or touching him.

Having served in the British Army for a number of years; I can only say that the people who deliberately try to antagonise our servicemen should be prepared for whatever comes their way. Personally I don't feel that the general public should be allowed this close to Royal Guards as the risk of an incident or serious terrorist attack is too great. Some people in these videos and generally in life are basically arseholes so we need to do everything to stop the risk to our brave men and women of our armed services.

My grandfather was around 6 foot tall. A formidable man. When he enlisted for WW1, he joined the Grenadier Guards and was a drill sergeant. I think he figured there may be some protection in being a Royal Guard. It may well have worked too as thank God, he survived after being dragged out of the mud of the Somme with two bullets in his chest. He went on to be the best grandad ever. One thing is for sure, I felt so safe with him, no-one crossed my grandad and he was scared of no-one too.

I believe the guards deserve far more respect than what they are getting. I'm not British, but I believe citizens of any country ought to respect their country's leadership and guardians. I also believe that foreigners ought to bring their best manners with them when they visit another country, and learn the customs and finer points of diplomacy BEFORE visiting that country; it could save them a lot of trouble.

These guards are there for the purpose of guarding the royal family. They should be respected and distance from them should be kept. They are very highly trained military type men, and are not in place to play games. Stay at least 25 feet from them, and keep out of their way when they have to move.

I have been told it is possible to make an appointment with someone, if the person has the time, who represents these guards if you would want any information about them. The guards when on duty are not allowed to talk or interact with anyone or anything that is outside of their job.

Don't allow yourself to be fooled by the ceremonial uniform. The Queen's Guards are carefully selected and quite accomplished, well trained and capable combat soldiers. They know vey well the difference between life and death decisions and disrespect. If you push too far, they would hurt more than your feelings. Best to be respectful and honorable or dont go.

My great uncle on my mother's side of the family was a royal guard who lived to be over one hundred years of age. However he never told us which royal he was guarding in the old country during the 19th century. I only got to meet with him once when he was already over 100 years of age. I am an American who used to live in London. While living there I met and married one of the Royal Guards ( Coldstream Guards ) and I always remember being told that the American's were the worse people to deal with. My husband said that one guy even offered him money to take his daughter out. Another one tried to shove a cigarette' in his month so as to take a picture.

What makes them not scary is their devotion to their work. Any civilian working was ever mocked or shown the level of disrespect some of these guards face they would not be so stoic. The uniform might be old and ceremonial but remember they guard royalty meaning they are not rank and file soldiers, these guys are GOOD. You need some green beret energy if you want to go toe to toe with them and if you HAD that training then you'd respect them enough to know better.

I am an Estonian by nationality and I think it is completely idiotic for tourists or civilians to mess with security guards! Especially considering the defense forces of the royal court, who are specially trained and have to fulfill their responsibilities in the kingdom! What I like about this programme is that you are showing valuable information to the ignorant public who do not show any respect to the officers in uniform. Those guards are on duty. They have strict rules to follow. We must never disturb them as if they are toys in a toy shop. Thank you for pointing out the important rules. Taking a photograph without going too close to the guards maybe ok. But mucking about disrespectfully, it’s not the guard who should be punished ,but the member of the public.
