You've been lyin', been untrue
Now they call me Little Boy Blue
Someday, baby, you're gonna find
Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine

You've been sneakin', doin' me dirt
Now they call me Little Boy Hurt
Someday, baby, you're gonna find
Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine

Little Boy Blue, that's my name
Little Boy Sad, you're to blame

You've been cheatin', been untrue
Now they call me Little Boy Blue
Someday, baby, you're gonna find
Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine

Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Johnny Burnette's song "Little Boy Sad" deal with the singer's feelings of hurt and betrayal after being cheated on by his lover. The opening lines of "You've been lyin', been untrue" establishes the singer's knowledge of the betrayal that's occurred, and sets the tone for the rest of the song. The refrain of "Now they call me Little Boy Blue/Sad/Hurt" is a nod to the old nursery rhyme, with the singer comparing himself to these nursery rhyme characters who are often portrayed as being vulnerable and helpless.

The chorus of the song is where the hurt and anger of the singer is most evident. The lyrics, "Someday, baby, you're gonna find/Nobody in the world's gonna give you lovin' as sweet as mine" suggests that the singer is aware that his lover will come to regret their actions by losing the love the singer was giving them. The repeated use of the phrase "Little Boy Blue/Sad/Hurt, that's my name" hammers home the hurt and vulnerability that the singer is feeling, as he's been reduced to these childish monikers.

Overall, "Little Boy Sad" is a song about heartbreak and the pain that comes with being betrayed by someone you love. The singer is attempting to express his emotions through these repetitive lyrics, and convey how hurt and vulnerable he feels due to his lover's infidelity.

Adored Johnny Burnette when I was 13 - he would have been so much older! How lucky he would have been to connect with me! Dream on, Johnny (now in your 80s).

Rocky Burnette went Top Ten once in the U.S. but Top Ten twice in Oz.  His first LP was entitled"The Son of Rock and Roll".  The Burnette Bros were not very successful on Coral in the 50's.  What a goer Liberty Records was until the British Musical Invasion.
