Tear It Up
Johnny Burnette & The Rock 'n' Roll Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come on little baby let's tear the dancefloor up
Come on little baby let's tear the dancefloor up
Come on little mama let me see you strut your stuff
Tear it up, tear it up
Tear it up, tear it up
Come on little baby let me see you strut your stuff

I'm leavin' little baby, gonna be gone a long-long time
I'm leavin' little baby, gonna be gone a long-long time
So come on little baby, show me a real good time
Tear it up, tear it up
Tear it up, tear it up
Come on little mama let's tear the dancefloor up
(Goow!)

Well you step back baby, move my way
Step around again an' let me hear you say
Tear it up, tear it up
Come on little baby let's tear the dancefloor up
Tear it up, tear it up

Tear it up, tear it up
Come on little mama let's tear the dancefloor up

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Johnny Burnette's "Tear It Up" are a call to action for the listener to let loose and dance. The opening lines, "Come on little baby let's tear the dancefloor up" repeat throughout the song, serving as a sort of mantra for the party-goers. The singer urges the listener to show off their moves with lines like "Come on little mama let me see you strut your stuff" and "step around again and let me hear you say/ Tear it up, tear it up."

There is also an undertone of sadness in the song with the lines "I'm leavin' little baby, gonna be gone a long-long time." It seems as though the singer is trying to make the most of the time they have left with their loved one and get lost in the music. This duality of partying and sadness creates an interesting contrast in the lyrics.

Overall, "Tear It Up" is a fun and energetic song that celebrates the joy of dancing and the power of music to lift one's spirits.

This song is pure rockabilly!

These are the true johnny brunette gems, before the record company made him into a pop idol. Never the same again.... Sadly.

@The170460

it was his choice, good money or nothing with rockabilly.

@trfesok

Dorsey son, Billy, performed this song with Mick Fleetwood's Zoo in 1983. So, I put both in my FMac playlist. Thanks for the upload!

First time hearing the original version of this song. These old rockabilly tunes and the Black R/B songs are really the basic  foundation of what  Rock n' Roll is (was) . You can't knock the Rock !

@plasteredbastard

exactly, a synthesis of the two resulted in the overall sound.

@andrewallen3826

Pure rock and roll

Johnny Burnette Trio....Don't make 'em like that any more... being 78 yrs old(young!) I remember 'em from the beginning. Met and talked with Paul Burlison quite a few yrs. back.  In the 80's(?) A real "country gentleman".  Boston area a couple of times, with the Sun Rhythm Section as they were called. (Paul was not part of Sun Records, though.) My band, Boston Rockabilly, originally BRMC, covered some of their tunes, hopefully makin' 'em sound like the originals having actually lived through the period. Best to all and keep on rockin'!!  Vic Layne,  Boston Rockabilly.  Revere, MA

@sandsoftime1954

I lived in Re-vvvere in the fifties. I loved Revere, so much adventure everyday, back then. The Indian Trail, Revere Beach, Suffering Downs and the Chelsea Creek. More than any six year old could ever ask for.
