Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes
Johnny Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drink to me only with thine eyes
And I will pledge with mine.
Or leave a kiss within the cup
And I'll not ask for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sip,
I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
Not so much hon'ring thee
As giving it a hope that there
It could not withered be;
But thou thereon did'st only breathe,
And sent'st it back to me,
Since when it grows and smells, I swear
Not of itself, but thee.

*repeat first verse

Overall Meaning

Johnny Cash's song Drink To Me Only With Thine Eyes opens with the invitation to drink only with one's eyes, promising mutual commitment. Then, it goes on to say that rather than asking for wine, leaving a kiss within the cup will suffice. The thirst that is spoken of is one that comes from the soul; it seeks a drink that is divine. However, if the drink of the gods is made available, the singer would not trade it for the drink offered through the lips of the beloved. In the second verse, the singer talks about sending a wreath to the beloved not as a tribute but just to give it life. But the gesture was not returned in the way expected by the singer. Yet, the wreath continues to grow and smell, a sign that it has taken on the essence of its recipient.

The song is not a Johnny Cash original; rather, it is an adaptation of a poem titled "To Celia" by Ben Jonson, an English dramatist, and poet. It was first published in 1616. The poem is about unrequited love and the use of the imagery of a wreath made of roses to express the depth of one's feelings. The poem is often featured in literature and has been set to music by several composers, including Beethoven and Ralph Vaughan Williams.

Line by Line Meaning

Drink to me only with thine eyes
Begging you to look at me and showing me affection with your eyes alone.

And I will pledge with mine.
I will reciprocate the love and affection you show me with my own gaze.

Or leave a kiss within the cup
Instead of sharing a drink, you could leave a kiss in the cup as a symbol of your love.

And I'll not ask for wine.
If you leave a kiss in the cup, I won't even need wine to feel the warmth of your love.

The thirst that from the soul doth rise
The desire for love and companionship that comes from a deep place within the soul.

Doth ask a drink divine;
This thirst requires a spiritual or divine connection to truly quench it.

But might I of Jove's nectar sip,
Given the opportunity to drink the nectar of the gods, even that wouldn't compare to the love I want from you.

I would not change for thine.
Your love is the only thing I desire and nothing else could ever compare.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
I recently sent you a wreath made of beautiful roses.

Not so much hon'ring thee
It wasn't just a gesture of honor or respect toward you.

As giving it a hope that there
It was more about expressing a hope that the roses, and our love, would flourish and never wilt away.

It could not withered be;
I was hoping that the wreath would stay alive and never wither or fade away.

But thou thereon did'st only breathe,
But you only breathed on it and didn't appreciate the true meaning behind it.

And sent'st it back to me,
You returned the wreath to me, without understanding its significance or meaning.

Since when it grows and smells, I swear
But since then, the roses have continued to grow and smell sweet and fragrant.

Not of itself, but thee.
And I believe this is not due to the roses themselves, but because of you and the love we share.

Drink to me only with thine eyes,
     And I will pledge with mine;
Or leave a kiss within the cup,
     And I'll not ask for wine.
The thirst that from the soul doth rise
     Doth ask a drink divine;
But might I of Jove's nectar sup,
     I would not change for thine.

I sent thee late a rosy wreath,
     Not so much honoring thee
As giving it a hope, that there
     It could not withered be.
But thou thereon didst only breathe,
     And sent'st it back to me;
Since when it grows, and smells, I swear,
     Not of itself, but thee.

The reason I wanna sing this next song
Is because it has so many, and such a strong memories for me
I can see me when I was 17 years old
Standing in the end of the Dyess high school gimnasium
At a senior class graduation, I was a junior at the time
The next year I graduated
But I was a junior and they called on me to sing a special
They called it for the graduation, for the commitment exercises, so
I'm sorry, but I don't remember my piano player's name
It was a school teacher, she played a piano and I sang this song
This is... I guess this is when I was looking for myself
But I never forgot it
Because it was one of my first public singing occasions
And I've sang this song mainly to myself
Ever since I was 17 years old because of those memories
I suppose this song is Elisabehean
The words sound like King James version of the bible
Drink to me only with thine eyes
And I will pledge with mine
Or leave a kiss within the cup

I was first introduced to this song from a Baritone classical singer but honestly it also sounds amazing with contemporary singing too. Really love it.

What a voice!!! All John's music is toe-tapping, simple and pure. Love it forever.

Giving my grandson a copy of The Martian Chronicles and want him to experience this song. Especially important because as a toddler I got him hooked on Ring of Fire and we watched many a video version with Johnny Cash performing.
