I Can't Help It
Johnny Cash Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Today I passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you
Somebody else stood by your side and he looked so satisfied
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

A picture from the past came slowly stealing
As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you
Then suddenly, I got that old time feeling
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

It's hard to know, another's lips will kiss you
And hold you just the way I used to do

Oh, Heaven only knows how much I miss you
I can't help it if I'm still in love with you

Overall Meaning

The song "I Can't Help It" by Johnny Cash is a lament of a man who still loves his ex-lover despite her being with somebody else. The lyrics "Today I passed you on the street and my heart fell at your feet" indicate that even after years of separation, he still falls for her completely. He is helpless when it comes to his love for her.

The third verse of the song, "A picture from the past came slowly stealing, As I brushed your arm and walked so close to you, Then suddenly, I got that old time feeling", deepens the theme of nostalgia that runs through the song. The intimacy and proximity between them triggers his memories and emotions, and he is transported back to the time when they were together. The final verse of the song, "It's hard to know, another's lips will kiss you, And hold you just the way I used to do, Oh, Heaven only knows how much I miss you", beautifully conveys the agony of a man who still loves the woman who is with someone else.

Overall, "I Can't Help It" speaks of universal emotions that many people can relate to. The song is timeless and embodies the pain of being in love with someone who is out of reach, while being reminded of their presence every day.

Where can I find more data on this song? I'm trying to figure out the provenance of all the 12 tracks from his 2nd LP. All the songs came from previous singles except for this one, and it's not on his 1st LP. So, where was it first released? Was it an unreleased track at the time it was included on his 2nd LP "Sings the Songs That Made Him Famous"?
