Thirteen
Johnny Cash Lyrics

I was born to bring trouble to wherever I'm at
Got the number thirteen tattooed on my neck
When the ink starts to itch
Then the black will turn to red
I was born in the soul of misery
Never had me a name
When I was young
Got a long line of heartache, I carry it well
The list of lives I've broken reach from here to hell
Bad luck wind been blowin' at my back
I pray you don't look at me
I pray I don't look back
I was born in the soul of misery
Never had me a name
They just gave me the number
When I was young
I was born in the soul of misery
Never had me a name
They just gave me the number
When I was young
They just gave me the number
When I was young
Johnny Cash's song Thirteen is a haunting and introspective reflection on the idea of luck and fate. The song begins with "Bad luck wind been blowin' at my back", suggesting a character who is destined for trouble and misfortune. The singer is not given a name, but instead has the number thirteen tattooed on their neck, perhaps indicating that they have been marked as an unlucky person from birth. The repeated phrase "I was born in the soul of misery" emphasizes the idea that the character's fate was predetermined from the beginning.
The chorus of the song speaks to the character's loneliness and isolation, with the line "Never had me a name, they just gave me the number when I was young". This suggests that the character has always been an outsider, defined by their lack of identity and the number they were assigned. The second verse reveals that the character has a "long line of heartache" behind them, and has hurt many people in their life. Despite this, the song does not judge or condemn the character, but rather sympathizes with their plight and acknowledges the inevitability of their fate.
One possible interpretation of the song is that it is a commentary on social issues such as poverty and institutionalization. The character's lack of name and assigned number may be a reference to the dehumanization experienced by people who are marginalized and oppressed by society. The repeated phrase "I pray you don't look at me" could represent the character's fear of being judged or rejected by others because of their past actions or circumstances. Overall, Thirteen is a powerful and evocative meditation on the role that luck and fate play in shaping our lives.

Won't you let me walk you home from school?
Won't you let me meet you at the pool?
Maybe Friday I can
Get tickets for the dance
And I'll take you, ooh-ooh
Won't you tell your dad, "Get off my back"
Tell him what we said 'bout 'Paint It Black'
Rock and Roll is here to stay
Come inside where it's okay
And I'll shake you, ooh-ooh
Won't you tell me what you're thinking of?
Would you be an outlaw for my love?
If it's so, well, let me know
If it's no, well, I can go
I won't make you, ooh-ooh

Hearing cash say “I pray you don’t look at me, I pray I don’t look back” is some chilling shit. I know it’s not his song but damn those lyrics fit a young Johnny so well

I've loved this song since the albulm came out & I can't believe I just learned (from Wikipedia) that Glenn wrote this for Johnny. What an honor to write a song for this legend. Also Glenn's version is outstanding. I'm always amazed at how well some songs can so easily switch genre's & still be damn good if not legendary, Hurt comes to mind.

A good song is a good song in any language or method of delivery.
Genres are just fences we put up to help categorize things, but they're ultimately pointless.

This SOUNDS like a Johnny Cash original! Hard-to-believe it was actually written by one of The Misfits!
