Ring of Fire
Johnny Cash & The Carter Family Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Love is a burnin' thing,
And it makes a fiery ring
Bound by wild desire
I fell into a ring of fire.

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

The taste of love is sweet
When hearts like ours meet.
I fell for you like a child
Oh, but the fire went wild.

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

I fell into a burnin' ring of fire
I went down, down, down,
And the flames went higher,
And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

The ring of fire, the ring of fire
The ring of fire

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song "Ring of Fire" by The Carter Family can be interpreted as a metaphor for the passionate and sometimes destructive nature of love. The opening lines suggest that love can be all-consuming and intense, like a fire that surrounds the singer. They fell into this fiery ring, unable to resist their wild desire. The repetition of the line "I fell into a burnin' ring of fire" adds to the sense of being trapped within the all-encompassing emotions of love.

As the song progresses, the singer reflects on the sweetness of falling in love, likening it to the taste of sugar. However, as their love intensifies, so does the burning of the ring of fire. The all-consuming nature of love is both exhilarating and dangerous, reflected in the repeated lyric "and it burns, burns, burns, the ring of fire".

Overall, the song can be seen as a warning of the perils of giving into our passions too fully, and urges listeners to be cautious with their hearts.

@Individuell83

@MIROSLAV LONCAR oh sorry
I wouldn't say it's better or worse, than Johnny's
It's just a total different arrangement
Even though I really prefer her live version to her studio version

A legendary live performance. Do you have the rest of Johnny and Carl's show at the Grand Ole Opry in 1968 ?

@mariowildner5874

This performance must be after the death of Luther. Carl Perkins replaced him before Bob Wootton stepped in.
