I watched an interview with Stephen Sondheim about the film. He was very happy with their performances. Also, and I am sorry I don't have the link handy, but there is a video here of Sondheim teaching the song. It appears Johnny Depp and Helen Bonham Carter are singing it to the letter of his expectations. Personally, I think it's the best performance of the many I have heard. Most are overstated and 'too Broadway' for my tastes.

This song is tragic to the very sole of it, Barker comes home after fifteen years of exile, hoping to find his wife and daughter at home, but instead finds out that his wife is dead and his daughter raised and held captive by the very man who caused it all. Then he finds his raizors, and projects all his affection and feelings towards them, instead of the family he was hoping for, and turns his mind towards vengeance. Very depressing, but beautifully made. And then when Lovett joins the song, with her affection and desire for him, it adds depth to their whole relationship. Sondheim is a genius.

Honestly Depp is my favorite version of Sweeney Todd. Most people I’ve seen play the role have a booming deep voice with power. Depp has a snarling, soothing voice that just sits better with me than the others. He brings a softer but scarier tone to the character. I have always loved this version.

Helena Bonham Carter is one of the greatest actresses of her time. She has such a beautiful face. So expressive. I feel her eyes do a lot of the talking. When she talks she speaks very softly. I once knew someone who criticized Johnny Depp for this role and saying he weren't as good as the live show Sweeney Todd without even watching the movie. I have to disagree, I watched the live show and I never felt as much emotion as I do from watching this masterpiece

agreed. You can even tell the difference from the openings: The musical is the tale of sweeney todd (which means a lot of parts are exxagerated and comical), while the adaptation IS sweeney todd (Like, this is how it actually happened)

@Gameking i was trying to say the movie feels more realistic. Like the stage one fels like a tale while the movie feels more grounded in reality. And that sondheim cut the opening number of "attend the tale of sweeney todd" because it woudlnt make sense in that context

Ive always thougth (thougth? I dont know, english is my second language, thinked maybe?) that he doesnt really care about his blades, hes just so desperate because he was waiting to get home and find his wife and daughter waiting for him, but when he got home the only thing that was waiting for him was his blades and it was the only thing that keep him from going completely insane, well thats my opinion.

I just watched Sondheim teaches on this musical number, I have to be honest...Johnny Depp got how Sondheim pictured it. As his voice were calm, seductive yet horrifying at the same time.

Helena Bonham Carter’s singing in so underrated in this movie. She does a great job of harmonizing with Depp and the most important thing about singing or playing music with someone is to know your place and time, which is done really well here. Plus I loved the songs where she takes the lead and you can see her having fun with role. It’s really good.

I am a Chef and the staff got really creeped out when I sang this to my Knife set last Halloween. :P
I recommend it to all Chefs out there to do the same it really quietens down any discipline problems you might be having. :D

Arguably the second-best song of the movie, the best one is still A Little Priest, seriously not enjoying this is impossible, I love this song for changing how I thought this would go, when I first watched this I went assuming typical vengeful serial killer seeking vengeance against the despicable judge, then this song came and... yeah I was not expecting to see the internal moment, this moment actually got my attention not just because the song's amazing but on how it establishes and reinforce its tone so magnificently, plus this made fall in love with this movie and now after watching this and seeing more stuff, this song completes me.

After one manages to get over the creepiness and gore (after watching the movie/bits of it several times) one starts to grasp the sheer beauty of this musical. At first I HATED everything - from the music to the actors. But I've come to be literally obsessed with it. Stephen Sondheim is a GENIUS. Also Tim, Helena, Johnny and Alan make such a fantastic team. Gorgeous in every way. (and I'm one who hates horror movies and thrillers)

Interestingly, at 2:59, there's this really cool, really deep double bass note that isn't actually in the soundtrack surprisingly. It slaps so hard and it really took me a while to pick up on it

These two movie actors make a pleasant enough fist of one of Sondheim's masterpieces - but there's a gulf of difference between competence and excellence; a chasm between being able to sing in tune - which most of us can do - and really being in possession of a 'voice', in the operatic or choral sense. I've heard this piece really and truly 'sung' out by the latter and it's mind-blowing.

even though i usually hate movies like this i love this one so much. must be cause 1. the ppl involved with it were johnny depp, helena bonham carter, and alan rickman, tim burton, and danny elfman. 2. the singing is amazing, 3. all the actors played their part so well, 4. the makeup, outfits, and backgrounds were amazing.
