He was a used car salesman before his career as a rockabilly artist took off the late 1950's. In the year 1952, he recorded a single called "Walking Away" for Shelby Singleton's D Records. The record didn't go anywhere and then he became a deejay for stations in Louisiana and Mexico. He also formed a band called The Texas Sons. They performed in Shreveport at the famous Louisiana Hayride, which would broadcast regularly on the radio station known as KWKH. In 1957 or 1958, he recorded the record "Lumberjack" and it didn't go anywhere like his first record.

Johnny Dollar went back to Texas and started his career in rockabilly. He is best known for his recording of Action Packed. That song was recorded around 1957-1958. Ronnie Dawson also recorded that song and made it famous. Johnny Dollar died on April 3, 1986 at the age of 56. He recorded a slew of unissued songs in the late 1950's and they weren't discovered until 1997. They were found in a closet in a home in North Dallas. In 1998, American record label Dragon Street released Mr.+Action+Packed. This compilation has twenty of Johnny Dollar's songs.
