My Funny Valentine
Johnny Mathis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Behold the way our fine feathered-friend
His virtue doth parade.
Thou knowest not, my dim witted friend,
The picture Thou hast made.

Thy vacant brow and thy tousled hair
Conceal Thy good intent.
Thou, noble upright, truthful, sincere
And slightly dopey gent,- you are...

My funny valentine,
Sweet comic valentine,
You make me smile with my heart.
You looks are laughable, unphotographable;

Yet you're my favorite work of art.
Is your figure less than Greek?
Is your mouth a little bit weak?
When you open it to speak, are you smart?

Don't change a hair for me,
Not if you care for me.

Stay little valentine stay.
Each day is valentine's day.

Overall Meaning

The song "My Funny Valentine" by Johnny Mathis captures the essence of love in a humorous and endearing way. The opening lines describe a bird who showcases its virtuous qualities to impress others. The singer addresses his "dim witted friend" and tells him that he does not realize the picture he makes. The second stanza tells us how his sincere yet dopey nature is endearing to someone else.

The singer then calls his friend 'My Funny Valentine' and speaks about how he makes him smile with his heart. He calls him a sweet comic valentine and shows how his looks are not important to him, as they are unphotographable. The singer is admiring his friend's inner beauty, which is more important to him than anything else.

The last stanza holds a simple message that tells his friend not to change for him, and to stay the same. Every day is a day of love, and the singer loves his friend for who he is.

Overall, the song My Funny Valentine talks about loving a person for who they are, despite their physical appearance. It's not about what the person looks like or how they present themselves, but rather about their inner beauty and their true nature. The song shows how love transcends all superficial barriers and connects people deep in their hearts.

oh how wonderful that you were there- and i am SO glad to make this available for you to see. I can see very clearly how spellbound you all were- that's what I was describing in the introduction- "the camera tells the story itself'-. What I wouldn't have given to be there with you all. I understand that the UK fans have been a dedicated group for many years- i am sure Johnny benefited from your admiration and caring as much as you all did and do from his work- and self. Enjoy, enjoy:)

This is a wonderful song- and i've heard that it was incredible to be there for this special event held by Johnny's dedicated fans from the UK. So nice you've enjoyed them in concert. Gil (Reigers is his name) has been with Johnny for over 39 years. A legacy of a musical relationship. Thanks for your very nice comments.

Beautiful beyond words! Johnny Mathis is an artist in every cell of his being. His voice rings with truth. He enchants those who hear and for a moment transcends the bounds of this world to offer a glimpse of unbearable beauty and depth. As a guitarist, singer, and musician, I am jealous to the bone of his marvelous guitarist, Gil, who has the great fortune to experience the art of Johnny Mathis. If JM creates this enchantment live with just his voice and a guitar, it is magic.

Well said- Less is "more" in words. One gets the feeling that when he sings, especially for an intimate audience, that he is singing just for them. I would think that's very close to the truth. So glad you found it here - enjoy!

Valentine Day Feb 14th, 2019: I am in awe; mesmerized and engrossed in his words, sounds, emotions, expressions and it brings tears to the eyes of this elderly man whose heart and mind becomes reminiscent of the time gone by of those people I happily admired and loved. Bruce @ 82 yrs.
