The First Noel
Johnny Mathis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The first Noel, the angel did say,
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the the East, beyond them far;
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel.

This star drew night to the northwest,
O'er Bethlehem it took it's rest;
And there it did both stop and stay,
Right over the place where Jesus lay.

Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,
Born is the King of Israel

Overall Meaning

The song 'The First Noel' narrates the story of the birth of Jesus Christ as told in the gospel of Luke. It is about the announcement of the birth of the Messiah to the shepherds. The first "Noel" is a French word which means "Christmas" and the song is believed to have originated in France in the 17th century. The opening lines tell us that an angel was sent down to the shepherds who were tending their sheep in the fields at night. The angel conveyed the good news of the birth of the Savior in Bethlehem. The shepherds were not wealthy people, therefore, they were referred to as 'certain poor shepherds'.

The second stanza describes how the shepherds looked up and saw a star that was shining brightly in the East. The star provided guidance to the shepherds and led them to the birthplace of Christ. The word ‘Noel’ is repeated throughout the song, which serves to add emphasis and a sense of joy and excitement. The final stanza sets the scene for the visit of the Magi and emphasizes that Christ was born for everyone. The song also mentions that the star stopped shining over the place where Jesus was born, which is significant because it emphasizes the supernatural aspect of Jesus’ birth.

My mom bought this album when it was released in 1958, she played it over and over every Christmas. I still have it and we have continued the tradition of playing it (although the sound quality has slightly diminished over the years) once again over and over. I can close my eyes and it takes me back to those magical Christmases as a kid. But most importantly these songs are Spiritually based and nourishment for the soul.
