Moon River
Johnny Mercer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I'm crossin' you in style someday.
Old dream maker, you heartbreaker,
Wherever you're goin', I'm goin'your way.
Two drifters, off to see the world.
There's such a lot of world to see.
We're after the same rainbow's end,
Waitin' round the bend,
Moon River and me.
The lyrics to Johnny Mercer's classic song "Moon River" evoke a sense of longing and wanderlust, as the singer dreams of crossing a wide river "in style someday." The river is personified as an "old dream maker" and "heartbreaker," suggesting that the journey across it may be both beautiful and challenging. The singer expresses a desire to follow the river wherever it leads, joined by a fellow traveler described as a "huckleberry friend" who shares the same goal of reaching the "rainbow's end" waiting just around the bend.

What a wonderful song by one of the best songwriters who ever lived. He was the king of smooth, but open-hearted love letters, set to tunes that immediately left an indelible, warm impression. When I think of the great Johnny Mercer, I'm proud to be a Georgia native, an American, and someone who can be inspired to sing a great master's musical poetry. On a hot summer afternoon, he was a cold glass of ice tea, in a rocker, on the veranda.

Growing up in Arkansas my family would typically listen to other similar musicians, however I grew to love his catalogue of music

Johnny recorded this in England and he insisted it be in 4/4 not 3/4. It has a distinctly 1970s feel to its instrumentation but I think that makes it distinctive as does the time signature. It is great to have a new take on his songs with his own feel stamped upon them.

Johnny Mercer is one of my idols because he never denied all of his influences, including the rich patois of Black Savannah natives in my home state of Georgia!
