Candy
Johnny Mercer & The Pied Pipers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Some say it's honey and the bee,
Well sit right down and let me tell you
What my love is to me.
"Candy"
I call my sugar "Candy"
Because I'm sweet on "Candy"
He/She understands me,
My understanding "Candy"
And "Candy"'s always handy
When I need sympathy
I wish that there were four of him/her
So I could love much more of him/her
He/She has taken my complete heart,
Got a sweet tooth for my sweetheart
"Candy"
Its gonna be just dandy
The day I take my "Candy"
And make him mine all mine
Mine
The song "Candy" by Johnny Mercer talks about the immense love that the singer has for their significant other whom they affectionately call "Candy". The lyrics start with different people interpreting love in different ways like sweet as a rose or honey and bee, but the singer goes on to explain why their love is like Candy to them. The singer explains that their love is sweet, just like Candy is sweet. The singer is completely invested in this relationship and refers to their partner as "my understanding Candy" indicating that they share a deep emotional connection. The lyrics also suggest that their partner always provides emotional support and is always there for them when they need it.
The singer's love for Candy is so intense that they wish there were more of him/her so that they could love them more. The lyrics convey a sense of longing and desire to be with Candy forever. The singer has given their heart to Candy and wishes to be with them for the rest of their lives. The song ends with the singer dreaming of the day that they can make Candy theirs - all mine, signifying the depth of the singer's love for Candy.

I am brought here by Carl Amari and Hollywood360. Carl airs classic radio episodes, and last night he aired a Christmas episode of "Candy Matson" from 1949. This is the theme song that the organist plays on the unmistakable Hammond. I love this song, as well as everything else that Johnny Mercer wrote or performed.
