Ghetto Love
Johnta Austin feat. Mary J Blige Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yo, what up, this Wyclef with Mary J
I serenade the girls with my acoustic guitar
You know what I'm sayin'?
Yo, fellas havin' problems with the chicks?
I want you right now to turn the lights down low
Pull your girl up next to you, I want you to sing this to her

If death comes for me tonight, girl
I want you to know that I love you
And no matter how tough I wouldn't dare
Only to you I would reveal my tears
So tell the police I ain't home tonight
Messin' around with you is gonna get me life
But when I look into your eyes, you're worth that sacrifice

If this is the kind of love that my mom used to warn me about
Man, I'm in trouble, I'm in real big trouble
If this is the kind of love that the old folks used to warn me about
Man, I'm in trouble, I'm in real big trouble

I need y'all to do me a favor

Someone please call 911
(Pick up the phone, yo)
Tell them I just been shot down and the bullet's in my heart
And it's piercin' through my soul
(I'm losin' blood, yo)
Feel my body gettin' cold

Someone please call 911
(Pick up the phone, yo)
The alleged assailant is five foot one
And she shot me through my soul
Feel my body gettin' cold

So cold, sometimes I feel like I'm a prisoner
I think I'm trapped here for a while
(But I'm always right here with you, girl)
And every breath I fight to take
Is as hard as these four walls I wanna break
I told the cops you wasn't here tonight
Messin' around with me is gonna get you life, oh yeah, yeah
But everytime I look into your eyes, then it's worth the sacrifice

If this is the kind of love that my mom used to warn me about
Man, I'm in trouble, I'm in real big trouble
If this is the kind of love that the old folks used to warn me about
Man, I'm in trouble, I'm in real big trouble

You got anything to say, girl?

Someone please call 911, yeah yeah
(Pick up the phone, yo)
Tell them I just got shot down
And it's piercin' through my soul
(I'm losin' blood' yo)
Feel my body gettin' cold

Someone please call 911
(Can you do that for me)
The alleged assailant was five foot one
And she shot me through my soul
(And he shot me through my heart)
Feel my body gettin' cold
(He didn't care, he didn't worry, he didn't wonder)

Wyclef and Mary J. Blige
I'm feelin' you, girl
I understand

And you're doin', what you're doin', would you do it
And do it and do it and do it for me

Overall Meaning

The song "Ghetto Love" by Johnta Austin feat. Mary J Blige begins with Wyclef Jean introducing himself and his acoustic guitar to serenade the girls. He encourages the boys to turn the lights down low, pull their girl close, and sing the song to her. The lyrics depict a man's deep and intense love for his girl, even in the face of death. He warns her that he may not make it through the night but wants her to know that he loves her and that she is worth the sacrifice. He expresses his fear of losing her and the difficulties he faces in his life but is willing to go through it all for her. The chorus emphasizes the message that the love they share is the kind that their parents have warned them about but is so irresistible that it has them in real big trouble.

The bridge is a dramatic twist that highlights the gravity of the situation. The man pleads for someone to call 911 because he has been shot down, and he can feel the bullet piercing through his heart and soul. He is aware that he may not survive and asks someone to call for help. The alleged assailant is his lover, who has shot him through the heart with her love, causing him to feel so cold as if his body is shutting down.

The song communicates a deep sense of passion and undeniable attraction between two people despite the dangers and risks. It highlights the depth of human emotions, the overwhelming power of love, and the unpredictable nature of life.

[LYRICS]
Sometimes I don't get a chance to really to tell you
But I promise you my love I'll never fail you
Don't you get it?
Each day we're writing history
A thousand years from now they'll talk about you and me
And I know sometimes I go hard for no reason at all
Put your soul through the business and touch the weight of your heart
But when you're backs on the wall there's a shortage of friends
You know that I'm with you till the end
'Cause we got hood love, cause I be cussin' I be screaming
Like its over
Then I'm loving then I'm feeling just to hold ya
And that's how we do
You know that hood love is the good love
That's me and you
How feel love?
Well I'm with ya never quit ya and
Now that's real love
When your not here then I miss ya cuz
I still love the way we do
You know that hood love is the good love
Ya that's me and you
Sometimes I think about leaving you
But wen I think about what we've been through
I get a feeling like it could be worse
'Cause I've given u my best and I don't mind it
That's fine
'Cause wen you loving somebody hard then you'll love that way for life
You got all of my heart and I'll never leave ya side
I gave my words to love all the way to the end
So no matter what I'll be right here
I'll be right here with you
'Cause we got hood love, cause I be cussing I be screaming
Like its over
Then I'm loving then I'm feening just to hold ya
And that's how we do
You know that hood love is the good love
That's me and you
How feel love?
Well I'm with ya never quit ya and
Now that's real love
When your not here then I miss ya cause
I still love the way that we do
You know that hood love is the good love
Ya that's me and you
Now I'll play tough but not for too long
You are someone I depend on
No matter how I act sometimes I can never walk away
Thought about it plenty times but no can take ya place
Ooh and there ain't no you, then there ain't no me
And if there ain't no us then I'd rather be by myself
'Cause no one else can understand my history and treat me like I need
'Cause we got hood love, cause I be cussing I be screaming
Like its over
Then I'm loving then I'm feening just to hold ya
And that's how we do
You know that hood love is the good love
That's me and you
How feel love?
Well I'm with ya never quit ya and
Now that's real love
When your not here then I miss ya cuz
I still love the way we do
You know that hood love is the good love
Ya that's me and you

Still mad at whoever took Johnta off the song and put Trey on. No shade but their version is undeniable heat. Even Mary slayed this version different. I felt the real life relationship.

@babysnoop84

I totally agree with you 👌🏿

@WasionKey

Johnta was the songwriter , this was just a reference record. But i agree, I like it better than the Final version 🤷🏾‍♂️

@TheFutureTelevision

@Marta Agree 100%! Thought I was the only one who felt that way

@lsharpe3263

I came here just to see if anyone else felt the same way. I just listened to the one with Trey on it. I LOVE me some Trey but I prefer this version better.

@babysnoop84

@@WasionKey It's not a demo. This version was supposed to be on Johnta's first album. But Mary liked it so much than she recovered for her "Stronger Witheach Tear" project album. B.Cox & Johnta suggested to her a duet with Trey Songz (frequently collaborator of both) who was in vogue at this time. 😉
