I loved watching this video. My parents owned a kitchen cutlery and sportsmans knife store for many years in downtown Oakland. Ca. Dad sharpened every imaginable tool but had a special fondness for sharpening scissors. Watching you today reminded me of his meticulous methods. And your workshop looks so much like his, it almost hurts. This was a great video and I will be passing it on to fellow seamstresses. Thank you for a walk down memory lane.

In 1967 I was in the army stationed in Augsburg Germany.
They had a unit there that was called property disposal, They would sell excess stuff. Some how they wound up with Weiss scissors that were brand new. I bought a few pairs of each type. One of them looks just like the ones you sharpened. They are amazing. I have sharpened them many times over the years and they are as good as new.
Most people would have tossed them when they were dull. You are right, a good pair of scissors will last a lifetime. I have shown all my kids how to sharpen their scissors.

Thanks so much for the video. I have several sewing shears that need sharpening. BTW both of those scissors that you showed are actually dressmaker shears because of the bent handle. The handle allows you to to keep the shears flat against the surface and slide the shears through the fabric.

I remember when I was a kid in the fifties there was an old guy that would travel around door to door and all he did was sharpen household items. He got some money and often times something to eat. The art of sharpening was almost lost.

My grand mother that raised me was a beautician I remember guys would come in and sharpen her scissors for her of course for a fee but there are people who still go from Barbara shop and beauty shops to the next doing just that shortening scissors and clippers so not all of the art has been lost

Taking material off the hollow ground is not recommended due to the alignment of the blades the hollow grind makes the blades self sharpening in normal use. If there is reason to flat the hollow grind a bit then material must be removed from the pivot surface to match.

I love the sound of your file dragging on the steel! When I was learning to sew patchwork quilts back in 2010 the ladies in the class (all experienced sewers) told me they just through away their blunt scissors and purchased another pair of inexpensive (but sharp) scissors. I was appalled!!! I showed them how easy it is to 'touch up'/hone their scissors using a knife steel and the ladies were genuinely surprised and excited as they all possessed knife steels!

My first time seeing a video by you. Just my ideal of how a video should be produced. Excellent clear instructions great close-ups plenty of lighting and the overall effect was entertaining as well as informative. So many of these things I see on YouTube are done by people who can barely talk and even then many presenters are self-indulgent and makes a thing boring as hell with over explanation of minutia with a slow pace. It is so Satisfying to finally see a short video so well produced in my opinion.

@Korina42 3:53 "You can see the shinny area here, that's the cutting edge." Why is there a cutting edge there? It's a single edge dual blade tool. There's no cutting edge on the back side. What's hard to understand about that?
Maybe my English just isn't the best but it's not very clear to the viewer what he's actually doing. It looks like he's holding them flat to me too but you don't know what he's doing with his other hand. He's not removing rust or mentioning anything about the procedure being for removing rust. The instructions he's giving are unclear and very confusing, the opposite of what this main comment I was replying to is claiming.
EDIT: Actually he clearly mentions he's only removing a little bit of material from the edge of the blade seconds later into the video. He just ruined those scissors.

You never touch the back of the blades unless you want to remove rust or something. They need to be perfectly flat on the back or you just ruined your scissors. The cutting edge isn't double sided like on most knives, it's only single sided so you only ever sharpen the front side. Are you both trolling or something?!

I worked in a sewing factory for years. Sharpened thousands of pairs on a double end bench grinder very successfully! A light touch,and close adherence to angle is key,and move quickly! Don't put blue hot spots on them! It's a muscle memory thing after the first couple hundred pair!

I really like when I watch a video and learn something I never intended to learn but that's super important or helpful. Showing the backside of the scissors and the cupping in the blade was really helpful to me because I would have tortured myself trying to get rid of the black stuff. Seriously, hours of frustration and losing my mind - that's how I get. You saved me. You're my hero. :)

For shears used on fiberglass or very heavy materials, i like a "rough" edge on the bevel. It helps to keep the material from slipping or "squeezing out" of the blades.

Loved your video I used to sharpen scissors as a profession and the only thing I might suggest is after you get through sharp putting the edge on both blades when you go to shut the scissors make sure you hold them apart when you bring the blades together and then when you open them back up again that's when you put the pressure on so that the edge gets to the top if that makes sense

I have a set of wiss shears I received working as a tire builder for Firestone in the late 60's use them for fabric, top and tonneau material, carpet,upholstery and gasket material they rarely require sharpening, just a touch up with a stone occasionly, the back side hasn't been touched and it still looks like new. A quality tool that with proper sharpening will last more than a lifetime.

Had a traveling salesman/scissor sharpener stop by the tire shop. His pitch was "most scissors will fold a dollar bill in half" He demonstrated, it cut his bill in half, said there sharp, see you next year.

Fun fact: chisel and scissor are two versions of the same word. That's why scissors are plural: they're made of two chisels. In fact, in French they're still exactly the same word: un ciseau (yet another version of the same word that "chisel" comes from) is a chisel, and des ciseaux are "some chisels", i.e., scissors.

Thanks for the video. The one mistake I used to do with scissors was that I was sharpening them too much. One must check the level of metal and sharpen only as much as that metal would take. Sharpening any more makes the edge weak and the scissors turn bland in no time.

I really like how substantial the older scissors are. I've got a few old wustof stainless ones that cut super clean but they aren't as nice as that pair in my opinion.

@goochman 420 you made a big smile here. I thought I was the only one brave enough to sacrifice a fine set of12" Shears made in Germany I think to cut sandpaper and thin sheetmetal on occasion. I felt a twinge remembering when I discovered a few pair of my shears in the drawer of the garage work bench. I knew that sweet sound of tailors shears cutting men's suiting fabric was not to be heard from them again. But, after watching your video, it's blade sharpening time. Thanks for the instruction. @karmelicanke what!? Are you saying i shouldn't use my Rimelspach fabric shears or Giesen & Forsthoff barber shears to cut sandpaper?!

Seriously though, I actually use a pair of old Dreizack kitchen shears for sandpaper and stuff like that nasty thick plastic packaging that is clearly sealed by Zeus himself. I have three pairs of those and the one I use for the rough stuff had clearly been through hell and back and had big gouges on ones side as if they got dragged down concrete. A buffer can only do so much, and they aren't really worth the time it would take to sand out such deep gouging so I figured since they still worked as they should i just decided they would be my " garage " shears. 😆

I do have a number of different dressmaker shears but as with the majority of those I've collected, they don't really get used after I restore them. I keep a nice pair of each type for actual use and sometimes change them out if I end up buying a new pair that I like more but dressmakers specifically are more used by my wife prepping fabrics for embroidery.

In the past, I have thrown out a large pair of garden shears and bought another one which has become dull. Enjoyed your video very much. I’ve wanted to know how to sharpen my scissors for some time. There was a time when you could take them to the Singer machine store. They would run an ad in the paper that the scissor sharpen man would be there on a certain day. It usually cost $1. For each pair of scissors.

Question: Since you don't dismantle the scissors I would think that eventually you'll get to a point where tightening will not produce the desired result do to material only being removed from a portion of the flat back and not directly under the pivot point. With rivets that's just the way it is. What do you think? Oh, and this video was a shear joy.

@Ross Hollinger You're technically correct. After getting sharpened this way many many times, eventually the bottom section will not cut properly or at all because there will be a gap, one that even the inward bend of the blades will not be enough to compensate for.

So while the method in this video is probably fine for general sharpening of minimally used scissors, eventually they will still need to grind the pivot ride so that its flush with the rest of the scissor blade.

Conversely, one could just disassemble and grind the entire blade whenever its time to sharpen so as to wear all parts evenly and maintain its general flatness. Especially when given how easy it would be to do on the scissors he demonstrates on, as he would just unscrew them. As quick as disassembly would be on them, there's no reason to not disassemble for even a general sharpening. If the scissors were riveted, I could certainly understand waiting until it seemed absolutely necessary to disassemble and grind the pivot ride.

That said, with the kind of use his shears get (he mentioned being used 2-3x a week for light duty applications) It would be decades before something like grinding the pivot ride becomes necessary, however, if you cut a lot of things that dull your scissors (cardboard, fiberglass, etc) and have to sharpen more often, then its probably better to disassemble, every time you sharpen.

@Ross Hollinger In that case you could take them apart and flatten the mating surfaces back into plane with the cutting edge, then reassemble. Complete overkill, but if this happened with a rivet, you could also file the rivet flush and tap it out to separate the two blades flatten/sharpen, get a new pin, reassemble and peen the pin over.

The reason for sharpening is not to bring the blades back together but to re tighten the screw. it comes unscrewed. the blades are bent in toward each other so you cna keep sharpening them.

This is useful information. I like many others never thought to sharpen my scissors. Even though it is a blade like any other. Duh. Such basic knowledge yet overlooked so often. My wife will definitely benefit from this as much as I will. Especially because she works with flowers. Only problem I'll have is her cutting herself on accident. It's amazing how we as modern Americans have lost some of the most basic of skills. Hell, this wasn't even considered a skill when I was a kid. Just something I had to do twice a month for all our scissors & knives. Youngsters today have no idea what to do when the stores are closed.

Years ago, a man, who was the equipment maintenance mechanic in a mens suit factory showed me how to sharpen scissors. Your right on the money. One little trick he showed me was, to get the proper cross, he would lay the blade half on the work bench and flex it to increase the bend curve, not easy to do and get real good results, but he did it with ease. After you get proper sharpness, on the angled edges, an occasional swipe of those edges across some 600 grit wet and dry sand paper will maintain a nice cutting edge, it leaves a fine burr edge, unlike what is wanted on a knife. ;-)

Good video. I learned how to sharpen scissors in elementary school. My Mom hired a man to sharpen the large amount of scissors we that got used regularly. We had all sorts of scissors from large fabric shears to various small medical versions my Dad used in his office (M.D.).
That sharpening guy should never have shown me so many steps to keeping scissors in prime condition because he lost his account at our house.

Yeah, the hardest ones to sharpen are hair cutting scissors. I sharpen pruning shears, lawnmower blades, and hedge clippers in my shop. I do a local landscaping/small engine business.

Well I have to give you a huge thank you cuz I don't use modern scissors I mainly use old ones like the ones you have but I have ones ranging from different sizes I mainly use them for leather work and I bought a big pair recently but sadly I don't know how to sharpen scissors and your video is the first one to pop up so thank you so much I've never learned how to sharpen scissors and I always replace them but there were certain pairs that I didn't want to replace thank you again for teaching me how to sharpen scissors now I can keep those scissors for a long time and keep using them

Great video...I've watched it a few times. I don't have the set-up you have but I practiced sharpening a cheap pair of scissors and an old metal pair. Used Arkansas stone and a file. Both scissors improved/work better but not ideal. Can't move the screw on either & the metal pair seems to have the screw rusted stuck in place. Trying to rotate it just wrecks the screw slot. Oh, well...too much slop in the old pair but maybe I'll figure out how to do this better.

As you know, most Fishers scissors are riveted but due to a clever design you can both tighten the blades and loosen them as well depending on which side of the rivet you tap with a small hammer.

I really appreciated the video. Now can you make one on how to sharpen pinking shears? I know they are old fashioned, but no one sharpens them at the fabric store anymore. I love the cut to keep fray at bay. Will you please make a new video on how to sharpen pinking shears?

i have some scissors inherited from my grandmother and great grandmother which were only used for fabric. They have become blunt and knicked over the years and i will certainly use this method to fix them. Over the years they have been "professionally" sharpened but were in worse state than before.

It is cheap window cleaner. It evaporates quickly so it won't rust out the plates.

You said we should post some of our tricks-~~so, here goes. If you are building simple furniture, (a fancy dresser is still a cabinet underneath with "frilly" edges) Here is what I do. Pre-sand your wood down to 240 grit sandpaper--or finer-~~ and then do your joint fabrication. Dry assemble the cabinet to make sure that all the parts fit right. Then final sand down to about 400 grit for the finish. Then masking tape all of the joints--AND VARNISH IT AT THAT POINT!. All five coats of varnish.THEN remove the masking tape and glue the cabinet together. If you do this, all of the glue stains that are so hard to clean out of the corners will not exist because the glue will not stick to the varnish and wipes off cleanly at the joints. By doing this you eliminate the "glue shadows" in the corners and will not have all the sandpaper scratches in the corners from trying to get the glue stain off. I have found doing it this way has eliminated hours and hours of trying to sand and finish the furniture I build. Sound crazy??? Then the question I would ask you would be--Which is easier to sand--a flat piece of wood with no corners, or trying to sand an assembled piece of furniture with all of the corners? Answer = the flat piece of wood.
Just a suggestion--but it has always worked very well for me. What kind of finish do I like when finished? Try a five coat 1,000 grit glow. Oh--and by the way--after you finish assembling the piece if you want a "glow" instead of a brassy finish, take a can of Johnson's Paste Wax and put it on thick. then put a gob of polish on a piece of 2,000 grit paper and very gently sand with the grain. It will take off the brassy look without damaging the varnish finish. After going over it very gently--take away the sand paper and military-style "spit-shine" the wax into the varnish and "Bob's your Uncle" you will have a Glowing, Waterproof cabinet for life.

Nice I restore antique furniture usually by disassembling it and like the idea of doing each piece separately and then reassembling it never ceases to amaze me the craftsmanship from the early 1900,s even in common furniture that survives to this day.

Scissors are more complex than they seem. The biggest mistake I've seen people make is to try to "sharpen" the inside surfaces that touch each other as they would a knife, removing more metal near the edge, and essentially ruining the cutting action.

How did you measure the angle of the bevel grind of the scissor blades. Did you use an angle finder such as a protractor and straight edge? Thanks for sharing the video

Good old scissors, like hand saws, are fairly easy to come by these days, but they always deed some maintenance. Nice video.

P.S. "Maintain" is the verb version of maintenance.

I own a couple of Westcott titanium scissors and highly recommended them. I use one for fabric cutting and the other for everything else, including kitchen use. Titanium doesn’t rust and maintains its edge through most any kind of abuse. I’ve never had to sharpen so I can’t address that but I imagine diamond plates would handle that. One of my scissors, the abused one, is probably ten years old. The plus is that they’re not terrifically expensive. They have gray and yellow plastic handles and can be bought at fabric shops and Wally-world, probably Amazon too.

I tend to use my diamond very fine file, even on the shop cheapo pound type, they last for a lot longer, and why not.. thank you for showing us your technique....👍👍

My proposal is to find a longer bolt to your black shears, and a counter-nut put on its protruding end! This way you could adjust the slop without swearing repeatedly on having the scissors loose again!
