ATTENTION
Joji Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Girl, would it kill you just to throw a little bit of attention?
If I hurt you, I'm afraid God's gonna teach me a lesson
Now would you hate me if I said goodbye
So quick you could eat my dust?
Now would you hate me if I run like hell
In the wind from dawn 'til dusk?
When you cry, you waste your time
Over boys you never liked

Can you not be so obvious?
So keep it light
So keep it light

Now, I thought I'd vocalized my traumas
But nobody will listen, hm
I know I'm cryptic and I'm weird
That shit comes off as indifferent, hm
I don't wanna die so young
Got so much to do
I don't smile for the camera
Only smile for you
Smile for you

Now would you hate me if I said goodbye
So quick you could eat my dust?
Now would you hate me if I ran like hell
In the wind from dawn 'til dusk?
When you cry, you waste your time
Over boys you never liked
Can you not?

Overall Meaning

In Joji’s song, ATTENTION, the singer pleads for the attention of a girl. He fears that he might be punished by God if he hurt the girl, and wants to make amends by receiving her attention. The singer obsesses over the idea of whether or not the girl would hate him if he left her quickly, so quickly that the dust from his departure could be consumed. He contemplates fleeing in the wind from dawn until dusk, and wonders if the girl would hate him for it.

The girl in the song is characterized as wasting her time crying over boys she never even really liked. Joji criticizes her for this, telling her to keep it light and to not be so obvious in her intentions. The singer then delves into his own inner turmoil, stating that he feels ignored and lonely. He feels like he has vocalized his traumas, yet nobody is listening to him. He acknowledges that he may come off as cryptic and indifferent, but he just wants the girl’s attention.

Overall, this song touches on themes of loneliness, obsession, and anxiety. It speaks to the desperation of wanting someone’s attention, yet feeling like nobody is listening. Joji’s lyrics paint a picture of a restless mind, searching for a connection in a world where it feels like nobody cares.

1. Attention is pretty good. The bass is a clever and experimental addition and adds to the song well. I just thing this song should have been the only one like that.
It worked well as an opener, but if you add earrape bass to lots of the other songs, it will get pretty repetitive. Other than that, its a pretty great bop. 8/10.

2. Slow dancing in the dark - I loved this when it first came out, and it gets better with each listen.
The impacting vocals and blasting instrumentals give me chills every time. I'd definitely slow dance to this song. 10/10

3. Test drive has some alright intrumental beats and the vocals are pretty catchy. I like it, but it was a little lacluster and didn't provide much mechanically. 6/10

4. Wanted U - This song has been the one I was looking forward to ever since the live performance and all the fan-made recreations.
And when I heard the real one, I almost cried.. The blasting electric guitar, the screaming vocals, you hear so much emotion in this song. The only complaint I have is that the guitar does sound awkard at times and doesn't line up with the vocals well. Easy 8/10.

5. Can't Get Over You - I don't even know how to describe this song. It's a straight bop. 10/10.

6. Yeah Right is easily my favorite song on the album. Both the instrumental and vocals are extremely soothing, as well as the video being equally stunning and nostalgic to the days of Joji Vlogs.
This song also has some of the most understandable lyrics, too. He talk about a girl that he knows isn't really into him, which I think is very relatable.
Finally, I think it sounds the most like some of his older songs using the drums and soft melodic piano of th Chloe Burbank style. An amazing bop, 11/10!!

7. No fun - This one is alright. The vocals and lyrics sound a lot like modern pop songs. However, as Joji normally does, he changed it up a lot with the instrumental, and he made it his own. Good 6/10

8. Why am I Still In LA - This one probably was one of the darkest on the track. The vocals are instrumentals are nice with the inclusion of the soft bells, and the part when the guitar kicks in is heart-pounding. The earrape, as I said could be toned down a little, though. I think the transitions between the soft bells and then the polar opposite pounding guitar is really aesthetically pleasing. A great 9/10.

9. Come Thru - I like this one a lot, with the inclusion of the classic Joji screaming background and clinking chains with bells. The vocal are super catchy and dream-like. Good 8/10.

10. R.I.P - This one I'm still iffy about. The beat is nice, but it's ruined with Trippie's vocals. I don't think they matched Joji's very well, which were amazing.
When it swtiched from Joji's vocals to Trippie's, I cringed in my seat a little bit. His lines some so empty. "RIP, I would die for you" on repeat wasn't the most interesting thing he could have done with his voice.
However, joji's lines are very memorable. Much better than "I wooooood diiiiiiii fooo' yoooo Arrh Ayeeee Peeeee." 5/10

11. XNXX - This one is really great, I recognized the old chain sound effects and background screaming from demons and loved it. The vocals didn't provide much though. They were a bit repetitive after a while. Otherwise, an okay song. 7/10

12. I'll See you In 40 - One of my favorite tracks. Bringing back the ukulele is a decision I fully support, however, I wish the song was more central towards the uke sounds like Worldstar Money and We Fall again did. We heard it clearly solely in the beginning and end of the song. The middle was geat though, I enjoyed the vocals a lot. 8/10.

In conclusion, ever since Yeah Right and Slow Dancing In The dark were released, I was hoping for more melancholic songs like what he made on souncloud. However, artists evolve and adapt new styles over time, which I understand. I loved the overall vibe on the album and I'll definitely be listening to this for months to come.
