Cuckoo's Nest
Jolly Rogers Lyrics

As a youth I hunted Cuckoo's Nests
In a corner of the field
I rumpled up so many that
My game was soon revealed
My parents said "Now that's enough" and
Shipped me off to school
So I began my studies thinking
Life can be so cruel

They said to pick a subject
That would hold my interest
But all that I could think of
Were those lonely Cuckoo's Nests
So I thought long and hard of
Something that would interest me
And finally decided I would study history

A Cuckoo's Nest, the very best
And neither high nor low!
I studied nesting all my lifе
And this is what I know:
It takes a ton of shillings
Lots of cases of the bеst
To learn the in's and out's
Of the Cuckoo's Nest!
In days of old, or so I'm told
The nests were huge and wild
With feathers going every way and
Never were they styled!
I don't mind the natural look
It's how some nests are made
But trimming nests short and
Small's more popular today

I studied nests from Dawn of Man
Right up to Modern Day
Though I grew bored I became an expert
So they say history was fine I guess
But nothing I'd applaud
So I decided on my break
That I'd study a-broad!

A Cuckoo's Nest, the very best
And neither high nor low!
I studied nesting all my life
And this is what I know:
It takes a ton of shillings
Lots of cases of the best
To learn the in's and out's
Of the Cuckoo's Nest!

So I packed up and experienced new
Tastes and smells and sights
But my head was focused
Concentrating day and night
I found nests were different every
Place that I would go
And I kept on searching 'cause
I really had to know!

There were variations not the least
Of which were hue
So I sorted all I could and
Here are just a few
Auburn feathers, black feathers
There was blonde and brown
And now some nests get clipped so
Not a feather can be found!

A Cuckoo's Nest, the very best
And neither high nor low!
I studied nesting all my life
And this is what I know:
It takes a ton of shillings
Lots of cases of the best
To learn the in's and out's
Of the Cuckoo's Nest!

So I was back in school and
I was done with history
Should study something useful so
I chose philosophy
They asked a lot of questions but
The one I liked the best
Was, "Which came first: the cuckoo
Or the nest?"

So there my friends, I had it
It would be my lifelong quest
And this would not be answered
For some silly classroom test
It was the most important question
In all of history
And the answer, I discovered
About half the time was me

A Cuckoo's Nest, the very best
And neither high nor low!
I studied nesting all my life
And this is what I know:
It takes a ton of shillings
Lots of cases of the best
To learn the in's and out's
Of the Cuckoo's Nest!
A Cuckoo's Nest, the very best
And neither high nor low!
I studied nesting all my life
And this is what I know:
It takes a ton of shillings
Lots of cases of the best

To learn the in's and out's
Of the Cuckoo's Nest!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Cuckoo's Nest" by Jolly Rogers delve into the journey of a person who, from a young age, had a fascination with exploring and studying cuckoo's nests. The opening lines describe how as a youth, the singer would seek out and disrupt these nests in a field, prompting a response from their parents to send them off to school, marking the beginning of their academic journey. The transition from the carefree exploration of nature to the structured environment of education sets the tone for the internal conflict between personal passion and external expectations that the singer grapples with throughout the song.

As the singer navigates the academic world, they struggle to find a subject that captivates them as much as the cuckoo's nests did. Despite being advised to choose a topic of interest, the singer finds themselves constantly drawn back to the intricacies of these nests, ultimately leading them to delve into the study of history. However, even as they become well-versed in historical knowledge, the pull of the cuckoo's nests remains strong, pushing them to embark on a journey of discovery and exploration.

The lyrics vividly depict the singer's lifelong dedication to unraveling the mysteries of cuckoo's nests, highlighting the extensive research and resources required to truly understand the complexities of these natural structures. Their relentless pursuit of knowledge takes them across different locations, where they observe the diverse variations in cuckoo's nest designs and features, further fueling their curiosity and determination to uncover the secrets hidden within these intricate creations.

The final verses of the song shift towards a philosophical contemplation, as the singer grapples with the timeless question of what came first: the cuckoo or the nest. This dilemma encapsulates the essence of their lifelong quest, emphasizing the profound significance they attribute to understanding the relationship between nature and creation. Ultimately, "Cuckoo's Nest" serves as a metaphor for the relentless pursuit of knowledge, the complexity of personal passions, and the eternal quest for understanding the intricacies of the world around us.

Can you do BlackBeard's courtship? I found this group due to my favorite book series, Bloody Jack, which is about a girl who sneaks upon a British -o war ship and becomes a sailor and later and a pirate. It's also how I discovered the Cuckoo's Nest.
