You gots to pay me, or go to jail!
Pay me my money now!
If I’d known the boss was blind
Pay me my money now!
I wouldn’t have gone to work
‘till half past nine! Pay me my money now!
You pay me, you owe me! Pay me my money now!
You gots to pay me, Mr stevedore!
Pay me my money now!
Thought I heard, the old man say
Pay me my money now!
Go to shore, spend all your pay!
Pay me my money now!
You pay me, you owe me! Pay me my money now!
You gots to pay me, or go to jail!
Pay me my monеy now!
Thought I heard, the men bеlow
Pay me my money now!
If you don’t pay me, the ship won’t go!
Pay me my money now!
You pay me, you owe me! Pay me my money now!
You gots to pay me, Mr stevedore!
Pay me my money now!
You owe me, you owe me! Pay me my money now!
You gots to pay me, or go to jail!
Pay me my money now!

The lyrics to Jolly Rogers's song "Pay Me" convey a clear message about the importance of being compensated for one's labor. The repetition of the phrase "Pay me my money now!" emphasizes the urgency and frustration of the singer, who demands to be paid what they are owed. The lyrics also suggest a power dynamic between the singer and the person responsible for paying them, be it a boss, a stevedore, or someone else.
The verse "If I’d known the boss was blind, I wouldn’t have gone to work till half past nine!" hints at a sense of exploitation or unfair treatment. The singer implies that they would have avoided working for someone who cannot adequately recognize their efforts or compensate them properly. This line reveals the resentment and disappointment felt by the singer when their efforts are not valued or acknowledged.
The repetition of the phrase "Pay me my money now!" throughout the song emphasizes the singer's insistence and determination to be paid. It serves as a rallying cry for justice and fairness, warning that not paying them will have consequences, such as going to jail or the ship not being able to function without their contribution.
Overall, "Pay Me" is a straightforward and assertive song that highlights the importance of receiving fair compensation for one's labor and the frustration that arises when this is not realized. It captures the universal desire for recognition, respect, and justice in the workplace.
