They formed in 1979 after Vangelis had been rumoured to replace Rick Wakeman in Yes a few years before. Anderson had contributed to Vangelis' albums "Heaven and Hell", "See You Later" and "Opera Sauvage".
They released a total of four albums with Anderson writing the lyrics and Vangelis composing the music: "Short Stories" in 1980, "The Friends of Mr. Cairo" in 1981, "Private Collection" in 1983, and "Page of Life" in 1991, which got re-released in 1998 with some additional tracks of which Vangelis reportedly did not approve. There are also two compilations, called "The Best of Jon & Vangelis" (1984) and "Chronicles" (1994)

Oh, oh
Please don't walk away from me
I just love you endlessly
You know I can not bear seeing you so far away from me
Don't you know it's bittersweet
Every time you love then leave
We both know I can not up and go like you so easily
Babe, you know I fear
Losing you my dear
Losing you my dear
So won't you come on here
Babe, you know I fear
Losing you my dear
So won't you come on here
We're running out of time
And I'm out of my mind
And all I want to do with you is to just cross the line
You know I'm so confused
I'm always loving you
But playing me is the only thing you know how to do
Oh
But playing me is the only thing you know how to do
Oh
So tell me why can't you see
Only you make me feel complete
Yeah, I hope you can not bear seeing me just letting this be
Even when I think we're through
Us plus him don't equal two
Your love takes away the pain you always have to put me through
So won't you come on here
Babe, you know I fear
Losing you my dear
Losing you my dear
So won't you come on here
Babe, you know I fear
Losing you my dear
So won't you come on here
We're running out of time
And I'm out of my mind
And all I want to do with you is to just cross the line
You know I'm so confused
I'm always loving you
But playing me is the only thing you know how to do
Oh
But playing me is the only thing you know how to do
Oh
Oh, don't play me
You're maybe's drive me crazy
If you're not playing
Say this is the real thing
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh, oh, oh
Oh, oh
Oh, oh
We're running out of time
And I'm out of my mind
And all I want to do with you is to just cross the line
You know I'm so confused
I'm always loving you
But playing me is the only thing you know how to do
Oh
But playing me is the only thing you know how to do
Oh
The song Play Within A Play by Jon & Vangelis follows the theme of a play within a play, as indicated by the title. The lyrics of the chorus, "I ain't really here to play no games, girl/ You already know my name, yeah/ Freaky deaky cause it ain't no thing, yeah" set the tone of the song, with the singer portraying himself as a player who is not interested in playing games. Meanwhile, the verses of the song provide a more in-depth look at different scenarios of relationships that involve players, especially with regards to sex, trust, and commitment.
The first verse, performed by Fat Joe, describes how a woman would do anything for money or to be associated with a celebrity. He warns men not to trust women who measure a man's worth by the amount of cash he has. Meanwhile, in Trick Daddy's verse, he advises women not to fall for lames and take some time to learn from real players. Lastly, Lil Jon's verse is the voice of a man who is straightforward and does not fuss about commitment, he only wants to have sexual intercourse with his female partner. Big Sam's verse goes into detail about his sexual escapades, emphasizing that he is only interested in a casual relationship with women.
Overall, the four verses of the song create a cohesive narrative about the casual sexual relationships between players and women, with the chorus maintaining the song's central message: these people aren't here to play games, they want to have fun.
