To the Runner
Jon Anderson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hold come a day dream
Ask a flower to kneel
When you pray to the runner

Spurn all ye kindle
And cradle his sweet pleasure
As you just look
Farther and farther beyond him
Beyond him, beyond him

Call for the giver, the taker
Rejoicing
As you just look
Farther and farther beyond him
Beyond him, beyond him

Spurn all ye kindle and cradle his sweet pleasure

In it all
To the devil take

In it all
To the devil take

Overall Meaning

Interpretation:

The song "To the Runner" by Jon Anderson is filled with metaphors and imagery. The first line "Hold come a day dream" could be interpreted as holding onto a dream or desire. The second line, "Ask a flower to kneel" seems to suggest an act of humility or submission. The next line, "When you pray to the runner" adds to the religious or spiritual theme of the song. The runner could be a symbol for a higher power or a guide one looks up to.

The chorus "Spurn all ye kindle and cradle his sweet pleasure" is an interesting one. To spurn means to reject or refuse something. Kindles could be interpreted as desires and pleasures. So the line is essentially saying to reject desires in order to cradle or embrace the sweet pleasure of the runner's guidance.

The next few lines "Call for the giver, the taker, rejoicing" are perhaps a call to embrace both the good and bad experiences in life, rejoicing in them because they are all part of the journey. The last two lines "In it all, to the devil take" seems to suggest that the singer is willing to accept everything that comes their way, even the bad, which could be interpreted as offering it all up to fate, or more literally, to the devil.

Overall, the song seems to be a spiritual journey about surrendering to a higher power and embracing the journey with all its ups and downs.

Been a YES fan ever since their first album, and a stalwart Jon fan forever. When I started buying Jon's independent works is when I came across his miraculous solo theme album Olias of Sunhillow, it's a magical work and a life changer, it's a spiritual experience. The last song "To The Runner" tops off this jewel of an album, harmonious with the albums unique unified sound, it is perhaps the most played on my iPod playlist, because I am the runner, Jon is the runner, a gentle yet strong song. Approaching 70 years age, I still physically run to this inspiring composition. No other musical artist has inspired me more than YES and Jon Anderson, thank you Jon.

I still remember standing in the record store holding and staring at this album cover thinking, hmm, Jon Anderson. Has to be good. Bought it and wore the grooves out. Epic music even today at the end of 2022.

Close to the Edge has been & is still my favorite album from 1974 till how. I came across this is a import record store in Sydney Australia. I took in the cover, the words, heard a tiny bit in the store, grabbed it & got home asap with the priceless treasure secured. To The Runner is my favorite track on the album. The Song of Seven & the Jon & Vangelis albums were at the top of my pile of most played for a very long time. I have stories to so many Yes & Jon Anderson songs. His voice is like most angelic sound from a human I've ever heard.
