I don Mr know the if you remember the guy that built that beautiful lake home and then he murdered his wife. I think she taught for Bedford County and I think he may have been a principal or something. He ended up a teacher or principle up in Gloucester, VA and had a girlfriend as well. Anyway, he burnt that beautiful house down to get insurance money because he could not afford to pay for the house. My son and I had seen the smoke coming from that house. The Lake does not seem to be that big of an area does it?

They tried to make the killing about the dangers of being a reporter but it had nothing to do with being a reporter, it's plainly obvious. I am not sure it rises to "in the line of duty" because it wasn't in official capacity that put them in danger. it was more like "on the job" because they happened to be at work when he killed them. He knew them personally, so it wasn't because they were reporter/cameraman.

not like a cop or a soldier or a fireman in that sense. their vocation brought them to the danger; in this case, it was a personal grudge, they weren't covering a story that went bad.

@meow good example. in my opinion, a pizza delivery get killed in the line of duty if he gets robbed while in uniform, killed by the customer, or gets into a car accident during delivery. if he catches a stray bullet in his front yard on the way, or his ex shoots him in the lobby for cheating, not so much.

in the live of duty has the implication to me of being killed as a result of the carrying out of your job, or specifically as a result of your vocation or as a result of having to go to that location to perform your work.

this seems personal so doesn't seem to me to fit.

To some extent one might raise the argument that; the crew was murdered for their representation of the station's brand and not their individual relationships -- personal or professional -- with the gunman. Thus the crew did died in their line of duty to their station, profession at large, and to themselves (engaged in productive and self fulfilling enterprise).

Similarly to a journalist who might be kidnapped and killed for their representation of foreign media even if they weren't doing anything in particular. They generally have been considered to have died within the line of duty. Perhaps these two situations share far to much in common?

They were literally on air, carrying out their duty as employees. It doesn't get more "line of duty" than that. Don't get caught up in the semantics of "do people have a duty to do this kind of work"

@@Fausto_4841 it's not about semantics. to die in the line of duty means that you have a job and the requirements of doing your job puts you in mortal danger (examples: soldier, cop, paramedic, war correspondent, firemen).
they were not killed because they were doing their job and their job was dangerous, they were killed while doing their job because their co-worker (former co-worker? It's been a while, so I might be misremembering that detail) was dangerous. they were not killed because they were reporting on the mob or police corruption or the Clintons, it was personal beef that blew up while they were on location.
it was not as a result of their job duties that they were killed, so not in the line of duty, but it was at work. they didn't knowingly put themselves in harm's way; they had no idea at all.

Otherwise you could say the victim of a school shooter died in the line of duty! Or someone dying in a transit bus accident on their way to work at a library died in the line of duty because they were on their way to work.

if you apply these terms to everybody because you feel sympathy for them, the words lose their meaning for everybody.

so I stand by my original comment, because it is not the same thing. It is still tragic though, just not in the line of duty.

My hometown, News channel..... The guy filmed it as he was doing it as well.... Shows him pointing the gun at the camera man's head then points the gun down, then brings it back up, without anyone noticing anything and only feet away from them all and starts shooting. The reporter and the cameraman were interviewing a lady at Smith mountain lake, she lived but the reporter woman and the cameraman did not.
