March
Jon Foreman Lyrics

Early one morning
We, my love and me
Walking along
We, birds and the bees
Trees of the forest
Started as one
We ended alone
Ah, now my love is gone
La, La, La, and time still marches on
But now time marches wrong
The lyrics of Jon Foreman's song "March" seems to depict a story of two lovers or companions who set out for a journey early in the morning. They walked along with birds and bees, and trees of the forest as their companions. However, something went wrong along the way that caused them to end up alone. The unhappiness of the singer is evident in the line "Ah, now my love is gone."
The song tries to convey the feeling of being lost, alone and hopeless. The scene is set with the couple walking with nature and its creatures, but as something goes wrong, an ominous feeling emerges. The lyrics are metaphorically written as they explain the incident that caused the lovers to end alone. Metaphorically, trees of the forest could signify the obstacles that hindered their journey. The singer's tone is melancholic as the lyrics "La, La, La, and time still marches on, But now time marches wrong" depict a feeling of hopelessness.

Then you should check out Randy Stonehill's album Wonderama. I feel his later stuff is hit or miss (he played around with different sounds a styles in different genres and some of it just kinda fell flat, to my ears anyway) but Wonderama is a quirky, beautiful masterpiece: its songs content and style span a wide range of the human experience in this big crazy world and the way he structures the whole album with a frame-tale like theme of going to a carnival brings it all together perfectly.
