Born in Chelsea, London, Pertwee was educated at Frensham Heights School, an independent school in Rowledge, near Farnham in Surrey, and at some other schools from which he was expelled. After school, he went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which he was also expelled after he refused to play the small part of a wind in a Greek play.

Pertwee is best known for his roles as CPO Pertwee in the long-running radio comedy The Navy Lark (1959 - 1977), the third incarnation of The Doctor in the science fiction television series Doctor Who (1970 - 1974), and as the title character in the series Worzel Gummidge. He also hosted the murder mystery quiz programme Whodunnit! between 1974 and 1978 for Thames Television. Pertwee also voiced the character of "Spotty" in the 1980s cartoon series SuperTed.

In 1972, he released a vocal version of the Doctor Who theme music entitled "Who is the Doctor", and in 1980 he released a single based on Worzel Gummidge entitled "Worzel's Song" from the album Worzel Gummidge Sings.

The second Doctor proved that the regeneration concept would work and that the show could go on. If Troughton had done a poor job or if someone else had been cast and done a poor job, we probably wouldn't have a new 36th series of Doctor Who starting this Spring!

Patrick proved that regeneration was a way to keep the show alive, but the show wasn't safe even then. It was only because the BBC lacked sufficient new shows to go into the colour era on BBC1 when the channel switched from black and white (BBC2 had made the change a year or two previously) that Doctor Who moved into the 1970s. So Pertwee's success in the role was just as crucial.

Jon Pertwee was the doyen of the Doctors for me, untouchable. But Troughton is the first one I can remember watching as a child and this clip reminds us of his brilliance. He somewhat stole the show whenever his Doctor returned, yet he was popular with the other Doctor Who actors. Tom Baker, an admirer, watched this adventure when getting to grips with taking over the role as the fourth version. He pinched the idea of jelly babies from Troughton, who used them in The Three Doctors (but not this clip). Colin Baker, the sixth Doctor, admitted that Patrick's mercurial version was his favourite. Though he breathes his own style into the part, Doctor no. 7, Sylvester McCoy, is very much a tribute to Troughton's impish second Doctor and that echo resurfaces again with Matt Smith's popular eleventh incarnation - floppy hair, bow tie and all. So the influence of Patrick Troughton's second Doctor has been immense and he had the daunting task of taking over and completely re-inventing a TV lead role from a much loved predecessor, for the first time. The success of the regeneration concept rested on Patrick's shoulders and he pulled it off magnificently.

There would be no Doctor Who beyond the fourth season if it weren't for Patrick Troughton. Deciding upon a radically different actor in both appearance and temperment was an enormous risk and it's doubtful anyone else could have pulled it off, even if they had happened upon Jon Pertwee at that time.

Pertwee is my Doctor. I always feel his adventures are the best. It was only when I acquired the DVDs that I realised he'd had a profound influence on my outlook on life and my sense of ethics.
Yet Troughton is somehow still my favourite.
Like a pair of uncles, Pertwee is the one to admire and respect; Troughton is the one to love.

This is what I love about the concept of the Doctor regens meeting each other. How there always is antagonism and denial that each regen is even the same guy, leaving each of the companions, particularly the ones who carry over with each regen, meeting each other and being thoroughly confused. But by the end each regen works and plays off one another perfectly well and makes for a good time.

You know it just occurred to me. The Doctor could be his OWN companion. Now that would make an interesting season. Let's say one doctor was trapped for a season, out of sync from his own time frame, and you end up with two Doctors going on adventures together, trying to make the TARDIS whole again, as this has caused her to split into two entities. One flying off into the fabric of space and time while the doctors search for her in a more erratic incomplete TARDIS and less able to control than ever.
But the big question is, who would be the companion and who would be the Doctor? Thus, the title, Doctor Who. I don't know how that would work, but it would be interesting and weird. At times, one could rescue the other from peril. Other story lines would include the dilemma of having two doctors in the same time line and the effects it would have on the time stream.

I think it's been fairly established that the Doctor running around with someone who is very much like him is actually a very bad idea. He needs someone to ground him to the concerns of the more vulnerable, short-lived, and, well, human people he's protecting.

@MaskedMan66 Yes it would be tricky but it could be possible who knows I am terrible at the recorder so I couldn't say if possible, but I know for a fact that it is possible to do just about anything as long as two things are true. One, you are simultaneously very determined and very bored and two, the thing you want to do is just the right kind of stupid and pointless but at the same time also amusing.

I got The Enemy of the World on DVD last year, one of the recovered lost episodes stories. Great fun to watch Troughton playing both The Doctor and the villain of the story. I rewatch it every now and then.

This is why this is the best multi-Doctor story! The irritation between the two Doctors was really genuine between the two actors, Patrick would ad-lib a lot of his lines in rehearsals, and Jon hated that. Apparently in the original draft, Jamie was to come back as well, but because Frazer Hines was committed to 'Emmerdale' he couldn't do it.

The odd thing about the early cross over episodes is that the earlier Doctor was always portrayed as being the superior. Not only does the Second Doctor here appear to be more wise than the Third, but they both defer to the First when he later shows up. This also held true for "The Five Doctors" where the Fifth Doctor, who was the oldest and most experienced of the bunch, was treated as the youngest and least experienced. Also in "The Two Doctors" when the Sixth meets the Second. It wasn't until Steven Moffat wrote "Timecrash", the mini-episode where the Tenth meets the Fifth, and the 50th anniversary special, where the Eleventh meets the Tenth and the War Doctor, that the oldest Doctor is treated as the one who has the most knowledge and experience.

i first started watching DOCTOR WHO in 1969, "The Abominable Snowmen", and Troughton was the Doctor. I was 8 years old, and just enthralled. It was amazing watching the series through to "The War Games", and its incredible ending where Troughton is exiled and reappears as Pertwee. Long before dvds, etc, it was just so brilliant a few years later to watch this story for the first time on tv, and see the Second Doctor's face again. i remember being a bit sad at the end when the story concluded, and Troughton said goodbye. He was my "favourite". i think the one you first watch tends to be that....

Oh my GOSH! This was BRILLIANT xD I've wondered how Two said "Oh you've redecorated, I don't like it!" I always though he said it, in a very silly way. @Fredrik Dunge He was 500, which is jolly well old for a regular Gallifreyan, and thus for a Time Lord who had never yet regenerated. There are multiple instances on the show of the Doctor remarking on his age ("This old body of mine is wearing a bit thin," for instance). And you're talking like each incarnation is a different person; the Doctor is the Doctor, and his age is his age.

It is fun seeing the different incarnations of the doctor bounce off each other - particularly when if one goes further and hears the third incarnation (I have the dvd) - it was actually a pity that William Hartnell was so unwell that he could not appear in person and even had to read his lines from cue cards but it worked wel l- he has a great line refering to the other two as a "dandy and a clown"

I love it when the Doctors meet their past selves, it tells you that the previous incarnations are still around and perhaps when they go and become the next Doctor the previous one goes to Gallifrey or something. RIP Patrick Troughton and Jon Pertwee ( I think his son Sean could play him to impersonate his dad, should they ever decide on a multi doctor episode for Jodie, I would like to see McGann’s version again ). In fact RIP all of the actors that have died that played a version of the doctor.

One of the best in terms of story, visuals also nice for the time and ahead of its time. I like the jumping in movements the actors did when arriving on a destination. The brigadier's character's very fitting with the story, the timelords look awesome in this story. I can say it's the only multiple doctors story I really like. Sad the 1st doctor only appeared from a screen but I understand it's due to health problems at hartnell's age back then.

To this day, this is still the best multi-Doctor show. "The Five Doctors" and "The Two Doctors" were certainly fun, but this one sets the standard. "I may call you Jo, mayn't I?" is just one of my favorite line deliveries in the whole series. :-) Troughton's Doctor is just so flippin adorable, and Pertwee will forever be the real Doctor for me!

With this clip, Two abruptly became my runner up favorite Doctor. Oh, what I wouldn’t GIVE for the show to attempt a massive crossover, recasting some of the oldest Doctors like they did when One and Twelve teamed up!

@julie everett The Curator wasn't the 4th Doctor; yes, he was played by Tom Baker, but he wasn't the 4th Doctor. He was most likely a far future version of The Doctor.

well they had 11 and 4 at the end of the 50th, and the scream that went round the world at that one!!!!! There was 10th and 5th for a short scene. Recasting 2nd is the only problem, 3rds has his son who has a remarkable resemblance and 4th through12th live

Yeah, it's good to let the drama breathe. There's a misconception that audiences don't have the same attention or patience these days. I think they do provided you write and act it well enough.

I always loved the dynamic between Throughton and Pertwee, The second hates the third because its an involuntary regeneration and he already knows this because season 6B. And the third hates the second because he acted in a way that he's stuck in this position and regeneration. I also love how they acted outside of their jobs too xD

I like that the one constant between two and three's meetings is that they absolutely despise each other and are always bickering about this and that, I honestly would want to see how they would interact with four,six and seven (and knowing six their arguments would probably be even more heated, Six's style being the first thing on the chopping block of course)

Such is the magic of Dr. Who that one can imagine that Pertwee's Doctor was once Troughton's Doctor and would soon be Baker's Doctor. The BBC definitely got the casting perfect.

Watching this this clip takes me back to a very exited 8 year old in 1973, having distant hazy memory images in my little head of Patrick Troughton, and John Pertwee (watching him from 1970 as a 5 year old) being my current Doctor with William Hartnell in short appearances ... Oh the Excitement of it All ...

You'd be surprised. He's actually risen in popularity over time, mostly because Sylvester himself is a little gem at conventions (and older fans have had time to get over the original classic 'slump' (so to speak) to come back and see how far the show had come before the cancellation. McCoy himself was good in all his stories (just a shame the stories themselves are a 50/50), but his last season of Doctor Who is easy to watch for NewWho fans because they're very, very similar.

If you want to see how action packed it was, search for "Babelcolour McCoy Years" tribute, or if you want the dramatic, "A Little Too Far | Doctor Who". There's tonnes of great tributes to McCoy's era, just have a snoop.

I met Patrick Troughton once. I was just little, maybe 7, and he happened to be at a party hosted by some friends of ours. I've no idea how they knew him. But my brother and I sneaked up to him while he was chatting to some other guests, and asked, very shyly, 'Can we have your autograph?'

He found a bit of paper, signed it and added, 'Doctor Who, Number Two!'

But over the years, we lost it. Always remember that, though.
