Kitchen at Parties
Jona Lewie Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm no good at chatting up and I always get rebuffed
Enough to drive a man to drink I don't do no washing up
I always leave the stuff piled up
A-piled up in the sink

But you will always find him in the kitchen at parties

Me and my girlfriend we argued and she ran away from home
She must have found somebody new and now I'm all alone

Living on my own. What am I supposed to do?

That's why you'll always find him in kitchen at parties
you will always find him in the kitchen at parties
You will always find him in the kitchen at parties

Then I met this debutante I said I like new wave rock
She was into french cuisine but I ain't no cordon bleu
This was at some do in Palmers Green
I had no luck with her

You will still find him in kitchen at parties
You will still find him in kitchen at parties

At last I met a pretty girl she laughed and talked with me
We both walked out of the kitchen and danced in a new way

And now I've done my time in the kitchen at parties
I've done my time in the kitchen at parties

He's done his time in the kitchen at parties
He's done his time in the kitchen at parties

He's done his time in the kitchen at parties
He's done his time in the kitchen at parties

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Jona Lewie's "Kitchen at Parties" depict a man who is not quite comfortable in social situations. He is not good at "chatting up" and often gets brushed off, which leads to his drinking habits. He does not do any washing up and always leaves the dishes piled up in the sink, but despite all of this, "you will always find him in the kitchen at parties.” This may be his safe haven or where he feels most comfortable, even though he is not the best host.

The man in the song talks about how he and his girlfriend argued and she left him, leaving him alone in his own space. He questions what he is supposed to do without anyone there, but again, he is not completely alone if he is at a party because he is still in the kitchen. He also talks about his failed attempts to impress women, referencing a debutante who was into French cuisine and not impressed by his interest in new wave rock. The lyrics suggest that he did not have any luck with her, but again, he can always be found in the kitchen at parties.

Towards the end of the song, the man finally meets a pretty girl who talks and laughs with him. They leave the kitchen and dance in a new way, which may symbolize his new-found confidence or success in social situations. He has finally "done his time in the kitchen at parties", indicating that he no longer needs to hide or feel uncomfortable in social situations because he has found his place.

I'm glad he was able to finally muster up the courage to make his way out of the kitchen at that party. What an emotional rollercoaster.
