After The Story broke up in 1994 Brooke went solo, first as Jonatha Brooke & The Story and then simply under her own name. Her first album, Plumb (1995) was followed by 10 Cent Wings (1997) and a harder-rocking album, Steady Pull (2001). In February of 2004 she released Back in the Circus, which marked a first collaboration with songwriter Eric Bazilian (from The Hooters), and a few creative covers. Back in the Circus was released in April 2005 in the UK combining tracks from Back in the Circus and Steady Pull.
2007 saw the release of Careful What You Wish For, on which she continued the collaborations, not only with Eric Bazilian, but also JC Chasez, Nick Lachey and Sally Dworsky (to whom she dedicated "Sally" on Back in the Circus). Her 2008 effort, The Works was a sort of collaborative effort with Woody Guthrie, returning to her folk roots by imbuing Guthrie's words with her own musical style, resulting in a whole that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts.
She's also contributed to soundtracks (e.g. I'll Try and other tracks on Peter Pan: Return to Neverland), and released Emmanuel (a track that she and Kevin Gilbert were working on when he died), and has her own record label Bad Dog (presumably a reference to Dog Dreams).

Sally
Jonatha Brooke Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And Sally I still do believe you could save me
'Cause I wander around and the world is so strange
I'm here on the ground and all of my dreams just fly away
Sally it's only September
But Sally we've both come a lifetime since May
And it's lines and it's rhymes that I can remember
'Cause everything's changed, deep in my heart
Love's rearranged, where do I start, where do I start?
I will, I can, I do, again
I will, I can, I do, again
Sally you'll have another sweet baby
Sally I'll write another ten songs
And we'll keep looking back at the paths we've not taken
Both of us still wondering where we belong
'Cause everything's changed and so we start
Love comes again, and there go our hearts, there go our hearts
I will, I can, I do, again
I will, I can, I do, again
I will, I can, I do, again
Sally I still have the green skirt you gave me
And Sally I still do believe you could save me.
The song "Sally" by Jonatha Brooke is about the bond between two women named Sally and the changes that life brings as they navigate through it. The opening lines "Sally I still have the green skirt you gave me, And Sally I still do believe you could save me" demonstrate this deep connection between the two. The green skirt given by Sally becomes a symbol of their friendship, which the singer cherishes and holds onto, despite the changes and hardships that come along.
The song then points out that as time passes, everything changes, and it is difficult to hold onto things that once seemed so certain. The singer talks about how their lives have changed since May, even though it is only September. The lines and rhymes that she remembers don't hold as much importance as what she wants to say but forgets. The chorus of "I will, I can, I do, again" shows determination to keep moving forward even when everything seems uncertain.
The song revisits the two friends' lives, highlighting the joys and struggles, and the things that they continue to hold onto. The singer talks about how Sally will have another baby, and she will write more songs, and how they both ponder what if things were different. The second chorus, "everything's changed, and so we start, Love comes again, and there go our hearts," suggests that although life changes, love remains. The song ends the way it started, with the singer holding onto the green skirt and believing that Sally could still save her.
