I did this for 8 years. I was a sergeant for more than half of that before I left. I quit because events like this were becoming a regular occurrence and there was absolutely nothing we could do about it. The job is dangerous, everyone knows and understands that, what people don't seem to understand is that a prison can NOT run the way it needs to run if only half of the positions are filled. I've worked in dormitories that were designed to run with 5 officers similar to this one, with just myself and one female officer. It's impossible. I've worked the yard without a security alpha, and every single dorm at the institution only have one officer in the station.. with only myself and maybe the captain/lieutenant of the shift for backup if anything happens. It's getting worse. On top of staff shortages, there is also the issue of dirty staff who may be at work but definitely do not have your back if anything goes down. One day a lot of people are going to die. Every day going in to work for my last 6 months it felt like walking into a burning building that everyone just ignored.

Wow: 8 years was a long time in that environment.
What is really bad is the correctional officers who make it unsafe for others as they have relationships with the inmates.
Department of criminal correlation . Imagine some getting out worse then when they went in because they have learned the criminal mind from their environment and then meet dysfunctional people who are supposed to abide by rules and law break them and encourage their behaviors.

Anyone who’s ever worked in a prison knows that inmates run the prisons. Correctional staff simply keep the inmates away from the public and the public away from the inmates. When you work inside the walls you’ve have to choose your battles. It shouldn’t be like that but it is.

Tigerlily55 Lily Prisons are owned by private companies who hire CO's and such to run the day-to-day ops and keep prisoners inside, gang leaders are used to help keep things under control and prevent riads because there aren't enough CO's to take on thousands of inmates. using them to self-police is a strategy. not sure why that's so shocking to you.

I worked at the prison right next door to this prison for quite a while and I’ve been in the prison system for some years. I can tell you that there are a variety of reasons why these inmates would not have faced formal disciplinary actions outside of DRs (disciplinary reports which simply take away either their commissary, recreation or day room privileges for about a month). The officers weren’t hurt. I don’t believe there was any intention to harm them. The inmates simply wanted to do a transaction amongst each other and they were holding back the officers from finding out about it. I would’ve liked to have seen further disciplinary action on this but I think the least amount of proper action was taken here.

This is exactly why I stop being a correctional officer. After someone was takin hostage no one wants to help you. That's the rule. Here the inmates took over the whole ja for 4 days. It was terrifying.

Putting criminally minded people together has always seemed counter intuitive for me. I realized this in detention at school. The dumbest idea ever was to put all the troubled kids in the same room together to feed of each other, befriend each other, and collectively foment and indoctrinate each other. We got to share and laugh at each other's troubled stories and antics, which served as encouragement and made us harder to deal with in the long run. Prison is even worse than this. It's a training ground for how to be a more dangerous person once they get out. I can think of thousands of ideas to make prison more effective. Thousands! Our system now is just a center for revenge. Someone breaks a law, so we get revenge by throwing them in prison. And while revenge can surely be sweet, it's the worst approach possible in the long term. The problem is the system is ran by power hungry people who get a nice warm gooey feeling from seeing people suffer, and by people who's understanding of human psychology is riddled with misconceptions and stupidity.

I worked CB 2 a couple times as a crosslevel from another unit. That means staffing levels were below minimum required...a daily occurance. Staff would be shifted between units to try to balance the risk. ADC is chronically understaffed. Best approach is ignore anything below a serious incident. CO's that pressed every issue were likely to become targets for violence, and when the yard goes off some day they would be running for their lives. On the other hand, I had a fair chance of being escorted to an exit by inmates. The incident in the video doesn't look too bad to the CO's working the beast. CO's uninjured...inmates just taking care of whatever business. Hard for the public to believe, but that's how it is when staffing levels are dangerously low. BTW, that's the film set of Stir Crazy. Built in 1932. Classic prison architecture.

I was staff barber from 2012 2013 at the walls. I would get the lose change the COs would leave in the vending machines in the front office and I would get me my mountain dews 😂 I did 4 yrs in the walls 2 yrs cb1 horseshoe and 2 in cb2

I work in one of the largest county jail systems in California and the public makes all of this possible. Prison reform acts want more out time, even for dangerous/serious fellons and if certain hours are not met then the lawsuits come. It’s a system which is no longer in the favor of law enforcement, in this case the COs. Facilities running with minimal staffing just to meet the “publics requests.” Lockdown is “inhumane.” It’s not like It used to be where law enforcement was valued and respected.

I remember talking with an x prison guard he said he quit because of how corrupt things are in the prison system. He said at first he was reporting all the corruption but he soon realized it was the norm and not the exception. Reporting it just made him a target and it was made clear to him that if he continued to do that he would be left alone and at the mercy of the prisoners as pay back. He said at one point he was targeted by the prisoners and after they forced him to do things he didn’t want to do to the prisoners… he quit (think broke back mountain).

@R S 26yrs total here in Arizona, florence, Tucson, safford, buckeye, all over the place and saw this same thing and much worse. It's all "yeah, lock em up and throw away the keys!". Until someone they care about goes through it, or themselves. See how you feel when it's you. Song takes a whole new tune then. And fact of the matter, I have found that most of the people screaming about throwing keys away got more than enough stuff they slid by or they would have gotten a real look at the inside. Just my earned opinion. People who don't really know shouldn't be holding nooses folks.

My pop was a CO California State Maximum prison in Corcoran CA for around 35 years. Told us stories when he started drinking about things he witnessed while on the job. Orchestrated “hits” on personnel and staff. Gang activity within guard ranks. Staff were actively bringing in contraband to inmates. They would get a piece of the action so to speak if they did so. That inmates also have connections to office staff and could get information on inmates and blackmail them by threatening to hurt their families on the outside. He had fellow co workers murdered by gangs because they spoke too much about things they knew. He was there for when the prison made the news for staging “Gladiator” type fights in solitary confinement yards. For people to pretend that they are badasses and talk about that job like they could just waltz into a prison and take down everyone. “A nail that sticks out will get hammered” you make things hard for an organized criminal organization that has a reach that stretches outside of prison walls you will be silenced. My pops is too proud to go to therapy to help deal with the things he has seen while on the beat and now is drinking himself to death. Correctional Officers who have PTSD are often forgot about or just ignored cause people think their job is “easy” or that they are just “glorified babysitters”. They had an idea of what they were stepping into but the reality of people being murdered, raped, sexually trafficked, corrupt staff who is secretly working with gangs, and the constant mental threat of being targeted if you show too much attention to discipline or ignore it too much can break any person. The sad part is that the people who feel the brunt of these emotions are the families. My family is dealing with my pops PTSD now that he has been retired for like 10 years now. Shout out to all the Corrections Officers walking that straight line and not getting tempted to get caught up in the bullshit

Well if guards and/or police officers are afraid from gang members (afraid to talk, afraid to punish, afraid to react) then the problem will never change.

Also for those who works for the system and sell crap inside they should be seriously talked before they even start a job at a prison facility! So unacceptable

They’re correct to run a program in this prison—but they’re basing it on giving power to the already powerful. It needs to be based on giving power to inmates who earn and deserve it, and they need to be treated as a group. The most important element is getting that group to understand, and eventually accept the consequences that follow every action. This applies to the staff as much as to the group.
And they have to earn their release after completing the program, which is designed to graduate people who are ready for the next step—freedom, or completion of their sentence in a more sane, and productive way.
The way the staff approached the inmates was the right approach—no violence. But where are the consequences for the group? For the initial “transfer”, and for organizing to protect that act?
They need a good program, and a very well-trained staff—it takes around three months of intensive training to bring a staff member up to full effectiveness. You can’t just wing this stuff—it’s life or death. And the future of our country, since we insist on having more incarceration than almost any country on earth.
Really want to be effective? Start these programs before they hit prison.

All of you watch too much TV. Most of "these people" are serving time for non-violent drug offenses. The truly dangerous, violent offenders are not afforded this level of freedom. If they had any inclination to harm those guards they would have done so immediately. Nobody was disciplined because nobody threatened anyone. The guards and the inmates get along just fine because the majority of corrections officers AND police officers do not think that we should be locking humans in cages for getting high either. Arizona government and courts are notoriously corrupt and it is ridiculously easy to wind up spending decades in prison for a minor "crime". I have close friends and family that work in both corrections and law enforcement that will fully attest that AZ is a "Good 'ol boy" system where the law depends on who you know. My husband spent his twenties locked up at both Florence and Lewis (for failing to return a borrowed car belonging to a friend's parent). I spent hours visiting him in both facilities every other weekend and I am not tough at all. I grew up in rural Texas and my biggest "crime" was a speeding ticket 25 years ago. I was never ever uncomfortable. Everyone was super friendly both the other prisoners, and the guards. Visitation was literally everyone hanging out freely in that big open space they show in the video. It was like a high school cafeteria vibe. Everyone walked around and visited with everyone else. There was one guard who was more concierge/vending machine repair man than militant guard. I never saw anything but a lot of friendly locker room type insults between the guards and the inmates.

Do you realize there are different levels of prisons? And prisoners who commit low level crimes are sent to different prisons or stay in a county prison compared to a violent offender? That's where they would be. In a prison for violent offenders. Why do you think not every prison has a death row? And the ones on death row are kept out of the general population. In my lifetime I've spent 16 years in a cell rather if it was in a country jail or state prison , the corrections is messed up no matter where you go to do your time at, the officers favor the most intimidating inmates/gang leaders to help gain control within the unit and to help keep things running smoothly for the officers on watch . I have a long story for you that I will try to shorten up 😆👍once I was in Delano prison it was late at night I was getting up to use the restroom saw 2 inmates making their way into the guards office quarters the guard had fell asleep with the lights being off the 2 inmates could have done anything to this guard as he was asleep with his door being partially opened but the 2 inmates only wanted his lunch bag 🤔 when the guard woke up found out his lunch bag had been stolen he was mad he talked with the head gang leaders of each race put out a hit on the inmate/inmates quickly the inmates who stole from the officer was identified and jumped and the officer ignored the fight going on afterwards the 2 inmates grabbed their stuff went and told the guard who they stole from that they needed out of the unit meaning they were rollen up other cos came and escorted the 2 inmates to be rehoused later that day the 2 inmates that took the cos lunch cooler ended up going to a unit next door 2 hours later they were beat up again and were relocated to probably the hole or pc no one heard of the 2 inmates again ?? I knew that the word spread next door that the 2 inmates stole from a guard that unit didnt want the thieving inmates also ! The inmates in the unit were I was housed said yeah we cant be allowing inmates stealing from the cos because the cos will make life harder on everyone by searching for stuff everyday ,not allowing the tv to be on or phones no yard calls so the thief's had to be punished by a bunch of criminals a odd thing but I see the point of it do I agree with it No I'm against violence today I am on my 6th year of being clean & sober and it's been 10 plus years since I've been off of parole and in no trouble with the law 😁🙏 I've tried changing my life all sorts of times and by different ways. I always knew in my heart that when I ask God to help change my life I best be serious about it , one day I was walking by a residential area just abserving all the happy families in my heart I was sad I wanted that life too but fell victim of being an addict and breaking laws always in jails . I ended up at a park I was still noticing all the families packing away their coolers and chairs it was late evening soon to be dark everyone was getting ready to leave and go home I had my cellphone and a bluetooth speaker I was going to play some rap but I ended up playing a Christian song called ( Chain Breaker) by zach Williams I believe..? I sat there listening to the words of this song and my eyes became watery I started talking with God befor I knew it I was repenting crying out for Gods love and mercy asking him to help me gain back control of my life , the song was over I was still sobbing and thanking Jesus then I remembered I had a pipe & meth in my pocket the devil was tempting me saying come on get high you'll feel better , the Angel on my other shoulder told me throw it away in a place no child could find it being I was in a park. I got up walked to the sidewalk looking for a drain there i stood infront of a city drain i said God i love you i broke the glass pipe it fell in the storm drain and i poured out the meth now the stuff was gone I found another Christian song to play walked down the road talking with God ended up going back home my family cried they worried for me countless days and nights I told them it was over if I could please stay for a few months they said absolutely. ..😇❤🙏😁🕊🌄 I love being clean and sober spending time with my family, kids,grandkids & my doggy ...🙂 God heard my prayer ,he hears all our prayers if perhaps someone is reading this who is struggling with a addiction. ...? Cry out to God ask him to help you overcome that addiction if your truly sick & tired of living that life style believe me there is a better way just gots to ask God for forgiveness, and ask for his help cut loose all friends who still use and dont listen to music that will put you in a mood to party or relapse . GOD BLESS 😁🕊🙏❤🙏🕊

In NSW Australia, prisons have a delegate system, where one representative from each group(race)inmates are known as delegates and would then work with management to resolve issues and disputes. Its a system that I found works, as it does not only help with sorting out issues with guard's and management but also with inmate on inmate problems.

I have always wondered what type of person applies for this job. When I got out of the military my girlfriend did and she just could not figure out why I did not want to be a CO with her, to me it makes absolutely no sense but hey I guess that's why we're all different

I worked in a prison/receiving unit before and that wasn’t a hostage situation, that was the inmates causing a distraction, if it was an hostage situation, it would’ve been physical and those extra officers wouldn’t have been able to even get into the cell block

Sometimes it is more about the illusion of control, care, custody than having actual control. Wardens don't keep their jobs long if there are alarms and near escapes/miscounts on a regular basis.

The prison staff lives outside the prison with their homes and families.
Gang leaders from inside prison can give orders to members on the streets to find them out there.
If I was prison staff I would be deathly afraid of offending gang leaders in there, knowing they can send people at any time to your front door.

In blocks that are 1 gang here next block is a different gang.
Inmates should only know their size and maybe gender.

Hell yesss. My son Frechette a high score against our begging and pleading went to be a CO he couldn’t even take the employees because they were so dirty too. Because he did not conform he left. Damn shame. Jeremiah would’ve been a great CEO but again because there’s so many dirty ones in there as well as on the street the officers on the street he couldn’t stay because he’s truly a good person. Kind of insane isn’t it

I was a Arizona State Corrections Officer in the 90's. I worked the Globe/Miami Prison. It's a minimum prison and we were always short staffed. We had no problems back then with the inmates. However, this was the time period when a fellow officer was killed by 3? inmates in Phoenix. All because the locks on the cell block guard doors didn't work. And the inmates knew it. They shanked him inside that room. I was the lead sniper for our TSU or tactical support unit. The whole prison was put on lock down and the inmates response was to plug up the plumbing. So were I was at the prison was on top one of the buildings giving cover fire as a group of officers went up and around a 3 story building Like a apartment building, throwing sack lunches into cells. And I do mean throwing! 1 officer with the food. 1 with a shotgun. 1 with pepper spray 1 with a M 16. These were 4 man cells if I remember correctly and we were NOT taking any chances. And I could put 5 rounds in a 1in square in under 20 seconds. And they moved the target a foot in any direction each shot. But we were all mad back then. Firm. Fair. Consistent. That was how we were told to treat the inmates. I did. Because I have a brother Still in prison and I hope he is still being treated like a human being just like I treated my 50 inmate work crew. 2 yrs and no problems. No write ups. And they had shovels, picks and rakes. I had a radio and handcuffs and probably 5-7 minutes before help could reach me. I am short but I was a boxer for 18 yrs and I made sure they all knew it one night on a punching bag. Except for the truly harden criminals who are can't be rehabilitated or don't want to be most or some inmates just want to survive and get out. The Mexican Mafia is one of the biggest gangs in the Arizona prison system. They Don't care about anyone or anything but themselves. It's a complicated place. It has its rewards but you have to remember it's nothing but words. Nothing personal. And don't give out personal information to the inmates.

@Matthew Arnold Only people that work in the system understand. Apparently there is some boundary issues. Also the inmates lack respect for the officers. The officers also have let it be known they fear them. Fear and courage can not operate in the same vessel. As a past supervisor at a prison since the officers are scared the supervisors have to step up. There are ways to get these inmates back under control but it requires work and man power.

Moral is don't have prisoners doing a prison officer's job. Learn from this, have enough staff on the unit;1 officer for every 15 inmates is asking for trouble. It can take 5 people to safely restrain a violent adult.

The auto locking doors they use in a lot of prisons, especially the high security ones, if you close the door before the lock completely throws, you can open the door whenever you want because the door thinks it wasn’t opened yet.

@Anonymous Has to be. I dropped by a 7-11 for coffee. Waited in line for a few minutes. 7-11 was filed with uniforms: Department of Corrections, Local Sheriff, County Police, Department of Immigration and Naturalization…the list goes on.

Every incarcerated person cost taxpayers about $134,400/year.

I've been to a lot of different prisons and mental hospitals. Not all prisons are the same. If your prison is made of reenforced concrete and houses low security inmates you are going to have an easier time than if it's made of cinder blocks and houses maximum security inmates. Arizona has a reputation for picking up a lot of dangerous contracts.

I actually took the civil service test to become a Corrections Officer in my state of NJ. Of 4 phases I made it to 1&2. I was given 53 pages of an application to fill out and send back. I did so and never heard back for almost 2 years saying in a letter that I neglected to mention that I had an arrest when I was 18. This is a lie because 10 pages asked and I spoke of my arrest each time. I took that as a sign that it wasn't for me. The only reason Officers go home is because the inmates allow them too. Period.

It's not all that bad, it's just depends on the type of prison you work at. I work for the Federal Prison System at a low security medical center and it's not that bad, especially compared to your penitentiaries. Of course it's a prison and things happen but not like what you see in this video. Most of the inmates at my institution just workout, watch TV, and play cards all day. I just open and close doors and make my rounds.

I'm a retired correctional officer started a 1989. This would have never what happened in my facility. Those inmates are clearly running that facility. I come from the 1990s era no video cameras we would have gone into that unit and gain control real quick. Every inmate four pointed and lockdown as far as the gang completely dismantled and shipped out of the facility the same day. The entire unit locked down for at least 30 days investigation upon every inmate disciplinary charges.

This is what happens when you try to save money by cutting staff and security at jails and prisons. Officers concerned for their own safety don't cross gang members because the officers know there is no real penalty for assaulting an officer. Many of these places need not only more officers, but serious penalties for inmates involved in crimes inside the prison walls.

What the public doesn't know. Jails and Prisons have given up on disciplining inmates and convicts. When I wrote up an inmate for serious charges, my supervisors would give a slap on the wrist or no discipline at all. I noticed a pattern. It was all by design. Coming from the Sheriff. The Sheriff even refused to use the word "inmate." He would refer to inmates as "Justice Involved Persons". The inmates literally rule the Asylum. Times are hard, I understand. But don't seek out a career as a Deputy, Officer or Corrections Officer. If you're corrupt, by all means get your piece of the pie. Be warned though, these so called tough guys in orange are major snitches against other inmates and against sworn staff.
